GOP loses the support of "Dads" as their daughter's rights come under fire

It’s no wonder why the “grooming” angle is a big issue for the Republicans, they can’t win on banning abortion in 2022 and they know it. They think if they distract folks on trans folks (myself included) existing in the same universe as everyone else then it’ll be enough to grow their margins which I don’t think it’s sticking as much as they hoped.

Even when it’s accurate a poll on a “generic congressional ballot” is of very limited use, since what matters in mid-terms is a whole bunch of separate election results rather than one nebulous “generic” result. Plenty of instances in the past where Democratic House Members won the popular vote by a large margin but still won fewer seats. So I’ll take the analysis at Fivethirtyeight over anything that a generic ballot can tell me.

The good news there is that right now the GOP is behind in their attempt to take the Senate. Bad news is that they still seem relatively likely to take the House.

I guess they never had mothers or sisters or girl cousins or friends who were girls or …

As always, there’s a subreddit for just about every situation:

r/LeopardsAteMyFace

Which sports this “About Community” description:

‘I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party. Revel in the schadenfreude anytime someone has a sad because they’re suffering consequences from something they voted for or supported or wanted to impose on other people.

What I don’t get is that in order to have a (traditionally conceived biological) daughter they must have had a female partner. So they didn’t care about her rights before?

Or care about women’s rights simply because it’s fair and equitable, even?

There seems to be an unspoken hierarchy of female property. A sister is worth one Rights point. A wife, maybe five. A daughter, though, is like twenty points. A man has got to protect that property at all costs. It’s sacred until it turns 18, at which time it loses ten points. Friends? Zero points. Their problems aren’t real.

Well put.
And, I don’t like it, but I seriously think that for a lot of men, raising a daughter is truly the first time in their lives that they realize girls and women are also full human beings with thoughts and dreams and personalities and goals, etc., just like boys and men.

Totally! Some empathy switch turns on in a dude’s brain when he has a daughter. I’ve actually seen it happen to two of my friends. Overnight they become 30% less dudebro. Suddenly women are people, as you say. It’s sad that this is what it takes to overcome the socialization they’ve had all their lives about this.

You’re assuming a man can be friends with a woman. They only exist as partners, potential partners or family in that mindset

Good point.
Not all men, for sure, but for so many, women are viewed as either “nurturers” (family), or potential sex partners, or nothing.
For those guys, a daughter is likely the first relationship they’ve had with a female human (after outgrowing the “cooties” age) where they aren’t expecting either of those things from the relationship, so get to know her as an actual person.

I once had a man i thought was becoming a friend tell me he wasn’t friends with any women he hadn’t previously had sex with. Said he literally couldn’t imagine it
I was like, “well, I guess we can’t be friends, then.” :woman_shrugging:t2:
