Mike Chitwood was Police Chief in Portland, Maine years ago and took a similar tack with people who were down on recent Somalian refugees. He’s the real deal. A no racist bullshit kind of guy. Normally I’m a bit ACAB, but Chitwood is the exception to the rule. He hasa proved himself over and over again to be a mensch.

The tone in this guy’s voice (and I don’t mean the Philly accent). . . this reflects exactly how I felt when I watched that video posted here a few days ago. I’m not even Jewish but holy shit that clip of them on the street made my blood boil. And I guess that’s part of their shtick, rile people up, spread hate and chaos, sow violence.

That statement was never meant to apply to every single cop individually, but is rather a condemnation of the system that encourages and reinforces the typical behavior. I’ll still stand with ACAB, but I’m willing to consider counter-examples in the meantime and I think this absolutely qualifies.

ACAB means all cops - by virtue of upholding the racist, oppressive system. Even if they do good things.
I don’t think that means we can’t praise them for making the system less nasty. But the system has to go.

Yeah, I can agree with that, I just think it’s sometimes a doing good things, but you’re still part of a horrible system that’s designed to be horrible, even if you have the best intent. While their in that mode, they are Schrödinger’s cops, both bastards and non-bastards at the same time. I’ll grant actual non-bastard status if they get out of it early before accepting the corruption onto themselves. (Sort of like the stories you’ll sometimes hear of people going into the border patrol with intent to improve the system from the inside, because that works so well. 
)

By “all cops”, do you mean all cops everywhere, or just all cops in the US? I don’t know of any countries that I can point to and say “this is how policing should be done”, but there may be one/some out there.

And the simple statistical inevitability that, if you have a long tenure as a cop, even if you’ve never directly done anything wrong yourself, you’ve personally witnessed abuse and done nothing. Because any cop who has done something about it has been fired or worse.
