The Dead Zone is my least fav novel of King’s because I felt so bad for Johnny; talk about getting a shitty break in life.
Yeah, in the end he sacrificed himself to save the world, and that’s awesome; but the narrative is both sad and scary, like a lot of SK’s work back then. (See Carrie.)
Getting back to the topic at hand, the silver lining is @nemomen’s point:
The more of this despicable shit about HIM that comes to light, the more the undecided and ‘middle-of-the-road’ voters are likely to be repelled enough to peel off in another direction come election day…
I’m crossing my fingers that, should Trump be elected POTUS, the military will demonstrate itself as the protector of the people of the United States—not its government.
This was actually my favorite thing Trump has said. Cos after all, anyone with sense knows that the US has tortured people it held in custody. Since the US signed international treaties banning torture that means it is illegal in US law. Which is why a legal scholar needed to be employed to pretend it was not torture but just an “enhanced interrogation”. By saying what he is saying he has forced attention on a crime committed by the prior President and demonstrated it was illegal. One wonders whether anyone will arrest Cheney, Rumsfeld or Hayden down the line?
But the fact that they are currently running free emphasizes my point. The structure of US democracy is fraying and needs some attention. Running away from the problem will make it worse. Which is why Obama has been able to conduct a drone warfare program which has killed many many innocent people without significant public scrutiny. As far as I am concerned every innocent person killed by US drones was murdered. Once you have state sponsored murder how much worse do you think things can get?
The fact that the US military said they would refuse his order is exactly my point.
I think the more important aspect is that the media has finally latched on. They’re framing it as election ending. They’ve gone 24 hour news cycle on it. CNN has been nothing but a panel discussion on the subject all day. It really could have been anything else if the news had chosen to latch on to it. But this is new, impossible to deny. And basically confirms a number of the other options, allowing them to be discussed as well.
And fraying it more helps how? A championship frayer, genius fraying, just huge huge frays! Should be expected to improve that because we expect a party that’s supporting him despite being “disgusted” at his policies and person might flip around? The recent expansion of presidential power started under Nixon. People who were perfectly happy to run with that are going to automatically reverse in sufficient numbers to reverse it in the face of the guy they voted for. That’s not a safe plan, it’s making excuses.
That’s sort of my point. Pick one. If the media had done their job any of his actions, any of these scandals should have and could have sunk him. But given our current false balance, wolf blitzed with a tablet, news bunk. This one is easily tied to a typical news narrative. It can not be denied, pence can’t say “that never happened”. It’s difficult to spin as a joke, entertainment, or false public bluster. It arrives at just the right time. No-one had seen it before. And it brings past scandals and accusations. It’s a perfect fit for an 8 hour CNN panel discussion.
ETA: oh and it slots nicely into the post debate narrative rather carefully imposed by Clinton. Temperament, crass misogyny, And even Pence can’t defend him (notice he’s not). Trump walked head first into that after the first debate.
All of this was already out there. But now that media has finally convinced itself to pay attention it should have a larger effect on the electorate.
On the tape Trump is bragging about sexual assault. The tape tells you that part clearly. It’s possible, though not likely, that he was making up that he liked to force himself on women by kissing and groping them. The factual basis of that brag doesn’t change that he was bragging about sexual assault. This is one of those line that should not be blurry, since sexual assault really isn’t funny, it’s not something we should ever condone normalizing, and certainly not something to brag about even if you’re actually lying as well as bragging about sexual assault.
fortunately, we don’t need hypotheticals. we have the reality of the two candidates already at hand.
this is probably true. still, the poll numbers do change over time – so there really are people on the fence.
if not the final results of the presidential election, i feel his remarks will change the down ticket races. that’s really the reason – imo – that many gop are distancing themselves now. they dont want to go down with the ship, they want to win re-election.
