Graham Norton said we should listen to trans people, so JK Rowling accused him of supporting "rape and death threats" and her fans hounded him off Twitter

Ive been a fan of the books and movies and still do like them, But her specifically bragging about her royalty checks as a comeback as if they protect her from all criticism of her asshole opinions (and in this case actual direct harm caused by her comments) makes me extremely embarrassed of my fondness of those stories. It makes it harder and harder to separate. She’s essentially forcing me to boycott anything she gets royalties from. Not that I’m buying a lot of harry potter stuff in 2022… It reminds me a lot of what happened to my ren and stimpy fandom. I feel like those cartoons are still amazing and influential, but I haven’t been able to even put my dvds on since John K was exposed as a major creep. maybe art can exist separate from the artist in the abstract, but on a personal level if every time you see the art you think of the creep behind it, (ESPECIALLY if you know they are getting royalties still) it kills any good vibes you might have once gotten. And art that makes you feel shitty isn’t much fun anymore.

Equal rites was third, not fifth (that would be sourcery).

Of course: my mistake.

A trivial one, and not really worth mentioning; in regards to the actual topic at hand.

I’m pretty certain it’s the same as anti-gay rhetoric everywhere, not just the UK. It’s literally a rewarming of the old bigotry.

It was interracial marriage before that and integration of society before that. They just can’t stand people who aren’t just like them.

She was an unregistered shapeshifter too, and could turn into a beetle.

What’s that whistling sound?

And the TERFs still don’t understand that reference, and think it is about them. I don’t mind that, but when they try to exclude trans people from identifying with Eskarina then I have another major problem with them.

Hint: Terry Pratchett knew trans people before he was famous.

Angua may be based on a RL trans woman who used to dress up as a wolf at sci-fi conventions as well.

Huh. Cool.

I have heard of him quietly asking people at signings which name they would prefer their book dedicated to if they hinted at being trans.
Pratchett didn’t just write, he listened.

And that’s why his books were so good, and got better over time…

What’s the significance of the beetle specifically?

Wow. That’s some Fred Rogers and Dolly Parton level humaning right there.

Cockroaches are beetles, and fascists often compare their targets to vermin.

At this point I can’t believe it is coincidence.

Thank you! TBH that’s probably the only thing about Rita that I’d be willing to believe is coincidence, only because basically all tiny animals are considered vermin in anglo culture and the “bugged conversation” pun writes itself.

But then, I’m of the belief that the big reveal was originally going to be that Rita was “a man in disguise” and someone still had enough influence at the time to get Rowling to change it, so I’m absolutely willing to believe that you’re right and it was a deliberate choice.

Because she seems to have lost the ability (or the audience) to get attention for creating anything GOOD. But is addicted to the attention that the Potter series gave her and has traded in tween kids for TERFS as acolytes. Even better she has ENEMIES to fight against now and fuck you money to rely on.
