Guide to weird movies

I love his argument that Russ Meyer wasn’t the maker of exploitation films. Unlike exploitation film makers who latch onto the latest fear-mongering trend, Meyer had a clear and consistent vision. A totally nuts, large-breasted, ultra-violent vision to be sure, but at least he was consistent.

The only horror movie I know of with both a cannibalistic bed that takes Pepto and and a despondent, voyeuristic Aubrey Beardsley.

Not only in terms of plot, but just the feel of it, you know? Yes, weird government sci-fi hijinks, but also: kinda trashy houses in Marin County, inhabited by sketchy people, burning out.

It’s not a great movie by any means, but I have a lot of affection for it, if just for its manic absurdity and truly awesome makeup. It’s one of those movies like Kung Pow where a tremendous amount of time, effort, and money was spent on what feels like an inside joke for the filmmakers’ amusement.

I saw it as a kid a couple of times and it was like a train crash. It was really bonkers and terrible, but i couldn’t help but watch. Watching the trailer is interesting, some day i may have to circle around to rewatching it and see how much of it i remember.

It starts strongly but sort of spirals into pointless silliness quickly. IMO mostly worth watching for:
• Randy Quaid being unhinged
• Wonderfully creative makeup
• Mr. T gleefully playing a bearded lady
• Bobcat Goldthwait as a sock
• The “Big Daddy Roth” inspired monsters

proof to me of Keanu’s lack of acting skill… Linklater couldn’t even draw emotion onto that face. A crime since it is among my favorite books. At least it gave us our first glimpse of a topless Winona.

But that’s not a weird movie, just good.

Maybe I’m just weird, but it strikes me that a lot of the titles people are searching for might be better classified as “film” as opposed to “movie.” :smirk:

On my own, I’ve seen quite a few of these from the main list, runners-up, and even the noted list, but I have to say just as many from all three lists were required/strongly suggested viewing in my Film and Media Studies courses. I think the cinema/film classification is appropriate.
