“I would be cautious about assuming this data breach contains only photo data,” said Chad Loder, the CEO of Habitu8, a cybersecurity firm that trains other companies on security awareness. The full scope of the breach may be much larger than what CBP revealed in its original statement, he said. In recent years, CBP has asked travelers for fingerprints, facial data, and, recently, even social-media accounts. “If CBP’s contractor was targeted specifically, it’s unlikely that the attacker would have stopped with just photo data,” Loder told me.

i keep saying that the sooner we accept that privacy died with the 20th century, the better.

I kinda feel like it was all an innocent accident with a tragic outcome. First we fooled around with a loaded gun and predictably shoot ourselves in the foot, and somehow never got around to look at it and now we are dying from a severe infection, sepsis or whatever

In a land of the free and a home of the brave, with justice for all… the original perpetrators who gathered and stored this information without the public’s consent would face criminal prosecution followed by appropriate sentencing up to and including execution. Oh well.

yeah, i agree. either way, not a good situation, but here we are and we need to accept it so we can figure out the next move.

Phillip Dick’s privacy scramble suits were fairly prescient.

Breaches happen… but that mobile device decryption key database with keys to everyone’s phone… that will be really REALLY secure. Honest.

Then they should let the market decide if this a profitable business.

And by that I mean they should be forced to supply free credit monitoring and such for a few years for each person involved.

Hopefully the hackers don’t have access to 3D mask printers.

This is why you don’t build facial recognition databases.

You can always opt out by simply not having a face.

indeed. just annoyed.

hearing congress critters complain about government reminds me of homer simpson holding the last tomacco plant, lisa screaming “give them the tomacco dad!” and him replying “i’m just one man, what can i do?” ( need i repeat, he’s holding the plant. )

wyden does good work but part of his job is holding the government security powers in check. to complain that the government should do something, well that’s him who should do something.

This will be stymied by a combination of “Executive Privilege” and Mitch McConnell’s legislative priorities.
