Dang. In 2006 my wife and I attended what was widely expected to be the last ever annual event in San Francisco where survivors of the 1906 earthquake gathered at a fire hydrant at Market Street to commemorate the day and time that it hit. There were a decent number of folks there, most of course too young to have remembered too much of the events that day, but a few who did.
But this post is a reminder that every single person who was there (or anywhere) in 1906 is now gone.
My great-grandfather landed at Ellis Island in 1906 (at the age of 19). He lived to be 102 and I really enjoyed knowing him. But he and every single other person who was there is long gone.
Damn!
This person was nearing 40 by the end of WW2! Let that sink in.
The things she must of seen along the way….
