The Matrix is breaking down.
The will in Midland, MI
My mother used to say…
“A rough cough and hiccough ploughs me through”.
Apparently, the “…ough” ending was an oddity of Dr. Johnson, who got to infect everyone with it via his dictionary, That being said, the two most common vowel sounds are the ‘e’ in “he” and the ‘e’ in “then”, with going to one letter. The rarest consonant, the ‘ck’ sound is shared between ‘k’, ‘c’, ‘ck’, ‘ch’, ‘qu’, ‘x’, sometimes ‘g’ and probably some others I can’t remember. Bernard Shaw had a phonetic alphabet with 20 letters, where capitals were a bit bigger but had the same shape. He championed it for years. When the first atomic bombs exploded, he wrote to ‘The Times’ complaining on the number of silent ‘b’ at the end of ‘Bomb’ that could have been saved with his system. He was a fanboy of a guy called Henry Sweet, who identified 128 vowels in English, God help us.
Okay, this was made by bible-thumpers, and I wonder how they translated “Lamb of God” to people who have never seen a sheep. But it is still cool.
Looks like an E39 dash.
I think I remember reading somewhere that some missionaries transposed “lamb” into “baby seal” to get the message across.
Quite fitting if you want an image that says pure and innocent.
Oh come on, Tom, I’m having none of It.
Actually if you play ⠐⠁⠕⁗⠇⠻◢ ⡟⣔⢠ as notes through a sequencer you hear a very pretty song! Here’s the audio:

I’d probably pee myself as an ADULT, if that guy popped around the corner, much less as a kid.
Ahhhrg! The cute; it BURNS!
It does look cool, but there’s a trend away from this. At least in Nunavut, official documents in Inuit languages have to be in Latin script as well as syllabics and there’s an expectation that eventually the syllabics will be retired. I get it; both scripts are equally foreign to the Inuit themselves, and the Latin script has the advantage of being supported by every item of technology out there.
I’ve been reading Mimi’s blog for at least 15 years. Recommended. One of the reasons I joined Twitter is that she posts a lot more there nowadays, although she still updates her blog from time to time.

RIP John Conway.
Thanks for that. I lived through decades of sci-fi (books and films) which surely use abugia (abugidas?), we even had amharic writing at home when I was a kid, and I didn’t know.
Also, that guy? Nice listening to him. Minutes well spent on YT. Which is nearly another mind-blowing thing…
