Hey man, do you like Yoga?

I believe I have found my new look. :+1:

So we have a pretty big national Yoga chain: Lululemon - and most of the advertising is pretty much the same. They are incredibly popular, so I always assumed it was flattering clothes for people who want to look flattering, so to speak.

I mean, fashion advertising in general is weird, anyway.

I thought I’d share this. I’m working on a yoga related startup and I purchased an SEO product and here’s the results. Seems like yoga is the Sears Catalog bra section for kids too stupid to find actual p*rn

Of course non-practioners are horny over yoga, that’s why they are called a “layperson”! The reality is that all people do yoga, only those who are not aware of this usually don’t do it as well. If yoga is thought of as striving for union, then a sexual aspect to this is perhaps not surprising.

What boggles me about yoga clothes is how gendered the marketing is. Most makers of yoga clothes have completely separate parts of their sites for clothes intended for male and female bodies. Unlike for non-yoga clothes, it is usually quick to go through both lists because 95% or more are the women’s list, with a few frumpy afterthoughts in the men’s section. Why doesn’t anybody offer the same bottoms? Maybe just put a little pouch on the male version. I usually complain about clothes being gendered, but this seems to be worse with regards to yoga.

ETA: Also, I have been to a few nude yoga classes, and it was nice without there being anything overtly “sexy” about it. But “yoga panties” does sound funny.

Back when I started, there was virtually no men’s clothing, so they wore unitards and these kind of bloomer style shorts. That was before bike tights became a thing.

I used to webmaster for a site of a very famous yoga teacher. About 10% of his traffic came from a link in an article for, uh, self mouth pleasuring - and the advice was to limber up and a link to his website for some reason. But that’s a lot of traffic. Made me think there was a market there

There’s a very funny SNL skit about this but I can’t be looking for it at work.

The whole yoga pants as fetish thing is super bizarre to me. But if you google up yoga pants you get a lot of sexy photos. I guess it’s kind of like “reality” p*rn in that it seems like real people and not actors.

Edit to add I do know a few people who do nude yoga as a real thing - but have seen a few videos that make me think that’s not really what most of these searches are about.

Well, yes, I do like yoga, thanks.

Some time ago I was dredging the torrent networks for standalone files of yoga workouts, and I wound up downloading probably ten files to review before actually using them as a workout guide. While nine of the files were nothing more than staid, standard workout videos (30-45 minutes of poses), one file was a soft-soft porn yoga workout. All the women were clothed in very low cut tops and tight spandex-material pants, and the camera would do long, lingering shots on the women’s faces, chests, and butts as they worked out (basically lots of boob/butt thrusting). No clothing was removed, and from the little I watched, the whole thing could’ve easily been titled, “Super Lecher Male Gazes On Women Doing Yoga”. Strange, creepy, and sadly American.

Not what I watch yoga videos for, but assuming a male gaze specifically is also choosing to frame this from a heteronormative perspective by default.

It’s weird because so much hard core stuff is there just at the mouse click that people prefer to watch yoga. It’s why I don’t do yoga at my work, even though the class is super popular. I do not need a bunch of engineers (mostly men) seeing how flexible I am. No thanks.
