I would love to see examples of what Florida found unacceptable in those Math textbooks

Isn’t that special!

suspicious.

“We at the textbook accreditation commitee have one simple rule. Bullshit walks and Money Talks. Checks should be made out to Friends of Ron DeSantis.”

Here’s another longish article that seems skeptical (and has different detaiils)

This might be a stretch but with DeSantis you never know.

I remember a lot of the news coverage on this issue. I believe a big part of the problem was poor communication (given the audience), and poor listening. What was really said and what people heard did not align. (An unfortunately common problem).

A lot of people got stuck on the math is subjective point. Raising comments like “I can say 1 +1=3 then?” without appreciating the real issues that relate to instructional methods, and teaching about history in math (In grade school I dont remember learning anything about the many important Islamic contributions to math, but I remember a lot of white guys…). So rather than listening, and discussing, people pulled the classic ignore and double down .

Unfortunately people also lack the knowledge to understand how complex (subjective might be a fair word) and debated high level math is. Infintessimals anyone? 0.999… = 1 still hurts my brain.

This should make it easy to trace the corruption.

“One example: A colored bar chart showing how levels of racial bias can vary by age group. It is part of a mathematical brain teaser involving polynomial models and is nestled on the bottom right-hand corner of page 56 in a pre-calculus online textbook consisting of more than 1,000 pages,” said the report. “The book is not identified on the state’s website. That’s not allowed, the department indicated, adding the complaint about the chart originated with a member of the public. Two other examples that originated with public complaints make reference to Social Emotional Learning (SEL), a methodology wherein students try to get in touch with their emotions and demonstrate empathy for others.”

So now we know. “Critical Race Theory” means, to them, “any statement which claims or implies that racism exists.”

Another article showing the examples:

Doubtless these four are the most extreme examples the state could come up with out of the many books they rejected. But the math textbook publisher who included the following chart plotting racial prejudice against political identification must have known they were playing with fire, even though I’m sure the chart is 100% accurate:

Edit to add: considering that the State won’t disclose which textbook or publisher the above chart came from, it’s entirely possible that they fabricated this as a fake example to get people to back off on criticizing them for censorship. No way to know unless a publisher comes forward and says “yes, that’s from our book.”

Their 4 examples include a book banned because it includes the sentence: “Students build proficiency with social awareness as they practice with empathizing with classmates.”

Wow!
I’d remove the 2nd “with” from that sentence if I was editing it, but hardly reason to throw the whole textbook out.

I’d remove the first “with,” but same conclusion. Seems a questionable reason for removing the whole book…
