Given that “opium” poppies are the same as “breadseed” poppies, which are also decorative, in the US the distinction between illegal and legal tends to be about treatment of the plant (i.e. extracting latex from it), rather than the plant itself. I wonder what the situation is in Japan… drug laws don’t necessarily make sense, so it could go either way, even though poppy seeds do have (limited) use in Japanese cooking.

Poppies grow wild around here, even in the road medians and margins, which always flower beautifully for a few days, then the state sends the mowers in to cut them down before anyone can ‘harvest’ them. Literally why we can’t have nice things.

Edit: I should mention that many of these medians have large signs that say “Wildflower Area: Do Not Mow” in them, all quite visible with all the wildflowers mown down around them.

Loads of them grow around here in people’s gardens, but even in public gardens, the somniferum has very pretty flowers, and honestly, the smooth leaves are more attractive than the classic field poppy.

Can’t even get any psychoactives from them. It’s Paranoid White Man Disease.™

Was out walking today, and spotted these on the public gardens, someone even asked me what they were, I was like papaverum somniferum
