This was obviously a good outcome, but do the defenders of the prison system have any good reason why they decided that a black man in prison for mail fraud would be a good cellmate for a former KKK grand wizard in prison for, one would assume, the murder of a black person for being black…?

As stated in the article, yes! Most people avoid people they fundamentally disagree with. This man has done something truly phenomenal by conversing with his polar opposites.
