This reminds me of some other crazy theory that the earth was expanding and oil was being made naturally at its depths and bubbling up to us (so we could burn it and destroy the ecosystem!)

Hollow Earth Theory is one of my favorites of the pseudosciences. There’s been some great fiction inspired by the idea, in particular the Pellucidar series by Edgar Rice Burroughs which in turn was the source material for the movie @AnthonyI posted above. There’s also an entire Hollow World Campaign Set for D&D and 2nd Edition AD&D. More recently we have Hollow Earth by Rudy Rucker, who does a great job of replicating those old pulp stories and in a fun twist includes an absolutely wonderful fictionalized version of Edgar Allen Poe.
