Once one crosses from acknowledging that some conspiracies actually exist (sometimes quite openly) or have a plausible basis for existing into the realm of conspiracism, it’s only a matter of time before one will embrace the “socialism of fools” by claiming that “da Joooos are behind it all!”

Ancient giant trees is a new one to me. That would be pretty cool, honestly.

And there really were ancient giant fungi/lichens: Prototaxites - Wikipedia

Wait, what is Hollow Earth and how is it so dangerous? Like the literal hollow earth, another civilization inside? Isn’t that more akin to UFOs and Cryptids?

Has to be some missing in there, after all this is the 21st century.

Is it though?

Hey, don’t start now, with another conspiracy theory…

It’s more extreme than UFOs and cryptids because we have reams of scientific evidence that the Earth is not a hollow sphere populated with dinosaurs and lost civilizations, whereas it’s more difficult to disprove the existence of UFOs or as-yet-undocumented species. It’s dangerous in the sense that a person so detached from objective reality can be persuaded of anything.

It’s the old Voltaire saying: “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

I would like to add to the “leaving reality” line the entire content of BoingBoing’s “Trending Now” section, and dear god make it stop coming.

Good, because I absolutely will. Iran-Contra was a real scandal, actually happened and people were absolutely killed because of it, so I don’t know why it’s considered as the same level as the Denver airport stuff.

Also, their “harm” scale topping out at antisemitism is a bit off, when “Global Warming is a Hoax” is in the process of causing the extinction of humanity.

The author clarified that part in a follow-up tweet.

OH I see now, flat earth was included as well.

I suppose fair point. And many of them who are flat earthers fall into other conspiracies as well. As one who watches at least one youtuber who spend time debunking these people, there are so many of them just woefully lacking basic knowledge and skills.

I’m bothered that I’m bothered about “adrenochrome” being spelled wrong.

More disturbing to me are the ones that do not lack knowledge or skills but go through tremendous lengths to convince themselves their nonsense theories still have merit.

The documentary Behind the Curve was fascinating to me because it turned out that the people involved were actually quite competent at designing scientific experiments to test their theories. The problem was that they invariably disregarded the results of those experiments because they were so invested in their crackpot belief system.

Yep, that guy is in it for the grift. Bob Knodel, has proved the earth curve at least twice in his videos, once shining a laser through a slit at a boat, and once showing that a $20,000 detected a 15 degree per hour drift. But he has branded himself as the father of modern flat earth theory, and I doubt he will ever give it up, unless he can no longer make money from it.

One of my favorite nuts on the youtubes, is this mud fossil guy, who claims rocks vaguely shaped like something else is that something else - giants, bones, organs, potatoes - and anything with a hint of red is fossilized blood.

I got all excited by that too!

Then I googled Ancient Giant Trees and was left SMFH…

They all top off at anti-Semitism, including the “global warming is a hoax” BS.
