My take on Metal Machine Music…
They are pretty well known in Europe. They regularly play larger venues… I’d love to go see them in Ljubljana sometime.
A friend of mine got to see her not too long ago down in NOLA… I do want to see her live before I die. She’s an incredibly vocalist.

Is Lou Reed with Metal Machine Music the first to take that concept and bring it into a larger pop consciousness, I wonder? Prior to that, is this sort of approach to music more within the avant-garde realm? Maybe some German stuff on the Krautrock scene? The Mothers? The Fugs? Capt. Beefheart?

Rolling Stone profiled her when she released her most recent records-
She talks about her process, drags Taylor Swift, and praises Amy Winehouse and Adele. Towards the end they ask her what she does for fun. I really liked her answer:
I actually think that spending a lot of time alone is one of the great luxuries we have left. There’s so many countries, they’re expected to share everything with everyone at every moment. And I … am not one of those kinds of people. I don’t even live with anyone. I don’t see the point. Why would I want to get married and have children? It’s been done! I’m not saying it’s a bad thing for those who feel committed to it, it’s just not my lust for life.

Many moons ago I was lucky to play a basement show in Allston with Gitane Demone’s band The Crystelles- easily one of my personal highlights, and still talked about to this day by the folks lucky enough to witness it.

Her music scared the shit out of me when I was a teenager.
Yeah, by '96/'97 they had played larger venues even in the US; I think the show I saw was some weird anomaly. But it was interesting to have the more intimate show, even if that wasn’t quite what they were aiming for.
Diamanda Galas still scares me.
I don’t think I’ve heard a recording in any genre that is more violent than Wild Women With Steak Knives; it’s just raw. Some of it doesn’t sound human. She isn’t even singing, she’s vocalizing something disturbing and primal.
She really is in a class by herself.I’m not going to say that I want to listen to her every day, but there are definitely times where she is exactly what I need.
I saw her twice, once doing Plague Mass, which, yeah, exhausting. But incredible.
The other time was with John-Paul Jones, which was more fun. Especially because a number of folks in the audience didn’t know a thing about her and were… surprised. Some tried to heckle her. That did not go well for them.
