Just listened to the 99 Percent Invisible podcast on this topic, including background on El Chapo’s favorite architect for the projects. The hydraulic gizmos used to access the hidden entrances were pretty cool, basically supervillain lair stuff.

More topical now than ever. A border patrol agent even tried explaining how tunnels render border walls irrelevant during Trump’s recent trip to the border but obviously it didn’t take.

They don’t mention that, to preserve secrecy, El Chapo would generally kill all the low-level workers upon completion of the tunnel.

Pro-tip: Never dig a tunnel for El Chapo.
