Introducing BBS, our new forums

I thought accounts that had more than minor activity would be recreated automatically, and yet I had to recreate my account. Does this mean my old comments are lost?

Cool! Of course, now Iā€™m drawing a complete blank!

Rob explained somewhere that theyā€™re still at BB, but donā€™t transfer here. :ā€™(

Jury is out. Site feels strange, somehow. And really, having to respond to three activation emails and create accounts here, WordPress and Gravatar? How deeply interwoven is this stuff?

This will only lead to porn. It always does.

I can understand some of these concerns, but I also like the fact that we get to use this in a sort of BETA form and maybe in part help shape later versions of this product, to make it better over all. So far it seems like a pretty smooth system (granted, Iā€™ve only posted a few timesā€¦). Also, disqus was good, but it sometimes ate posts. But there is no software without bugsā€¦

Is there a way to get a threaded/tree view rather than the ā€œin reply toā€ links?

Second the concern about accessibility, though I havenā€™t tested to see just how well or poorly this will work in text/dumb-browser/screen-reader modes. A picture is only worth a thousand words if you can see the picture.

Well, heā€™s a curmudgeon, so partially, maybe?

Well, it took me a while to figure out how to use it, but, sigh, fine.

Lost my username, though, because it was too long. Boo.

Hasnā€™t someone invented to sarcasm mark yet?

Re the character minimumā€¦ Knowing the people here, I really donā€™t think anyone is going to have trouble coming up with a bit more to say.

I suspect the intent is to screen out ā€œme tooā€ and ā€œfrack youā€ and other near-contentless comments.

Hm. Clicking on the ā€œin replyā€ does bring up the referenced post, and it looks like clicking the up-arrow from there chases back fartherā€¦ Still means we donā€™t see surrounding context very well. Sigh.

following an in-thread conversation seems ā€“ to me at least ā€“ to be difficult/cumbersome to navigate.

is there anyway that responses, and responses to responses, can be linear, rather than only seeing the one isolated comment preceding or following the comment that you are reading at the time? having to jump all over the thread to follow a discussion ruins the reading flow of the thread.

my apologies if i am missing the obvious here. long day chained to a computer.

(And my last comment was less than 20 characters. Robā€™s already fixed it; now thatā€™s some snappy service!)

and of course 20 more characters.

Hmmmā€¦ Itā€™s good, simple, yet gets the point across. I like it! Although it could be confused with a confused anime face maybe?

Not any more, according to milliefinkā€¦ her last post was indeed less than 20ā€¦

Also, too complicated! Milliefinkā€™s is still the top one!

Oh, maybe this could be a new post!!! BRB.

If it ainā€™t broke, donā€™t fix it. Every ā€˜improvementā€™ to this website makes me like it a little bit less.

What happened to the Directory of Wonderful Things? The content has changed dramatically (e.g., horrible political news, and lot of stuff that definitely isnā€™t ā€˜wonderfulā€™). At least the comments were enjoyable, as they were generally on-topic and well-moderated. Now itā€™s just another forum. Meh.

Big step backwards, but itā€™s not my site. To each his own, but I miss enjoying this site as much as I used to.
