Introducing BBS, our new forums

Yeah, my sister took that one.

If you had a native BB account, log into it at http://boingboing.net/wp-login.php and that should show them all.

If you had a disqus account, you’d log into Disqus – they’ll still be there.

And you were doing so well… !

I don’t think this will work but I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Where? I log in, I get a dashboard, and a profile. How do I go from there to my comments?

Where? When I do login there all I get is some profile options, and an empty dashboard with Wordpress blog posts.

No. I mean, didn’t you used to be Rob Beschizza, and now you’re just Besschizza. Why the change?

I think a lot of the pain here is caused by UI roughness at our end (BB) as we make the switch. Once things at the “blog end” are cleaned up and the design here at the forum end is refined, it’ll be less annoying to move between them.

And as time goes by, user-created threads should begin to outnumber blog threads, so it’ll feel less like an ‘extra click comment form’ and more like a nice place to hang out. Letting the community take on a life of its own, independent of our own postings, is another big attraction for us.

I like the fact that after about 3 posts it’s impossible to see anything, even on a gigantic 27" display, so I’m absolved of the need to make sure someone else hasn’t already made my point.

Also, it’s a huge pain in the ass to post anyway, so in a week or so it’s going to be the same three people saying “you go girl!” to each other over and over.

Intel Macbook, OS X 10.6.8, firefox 21.

But seriously, you shouldn’t have to ask. It’s a forum, not an FPS. I shouldn’t need a faster computer.

Maybe we could rewrite it in WebGL?

I usually use beschizza as a username; Discourse is made to be a bit twitter-like with username mentions, so I guess that’s why the ‘real name’ is not used in threads.

Nah, sorry dude, I’m gonna have to ask for my $0 dollars back

I just wanted to post to see if I could post. The introductory post seemed like a good space. I’m kind of flummoxed by how different this is, but I like new things.

All I remember is that I never had to leave the story I was reading to comment before. This new way is annoying. I like the system as a forum system, but Disqus/comments were always better than forum posts to me.

Jumping into a forum page is something straight out of the past. It’s counter intuitive and will lead to a decline in participation I’m imagining (though probably some neat community stuff that wouldn’t be possible otherwise).

A decline in some kinds of participation, yes. But think about the kind of “participation” one gets on a mostly anonymous comment form at the bottom of a blog entry.

Unfortunately not everybody can see that symbol. So I guess you would possibly go with (?) or [?] instead. I dunno. Gonna head over to the sarcasm tag thread to figure it out.

Antinous is the lead moderator, and rules the roost with Felton.

It might not be ready yet, as we haven’t uncoupled Disqus from the site. But when it is, I think comment search will return as a menu option when logged in.

Hi; this is Bardfinn — I’ve been trying to get into the “Bardfinn” account, and have been unsuccessful. I think I managed to hose it by creating it on test.discourse.org first and then requesting a password reset. Hoping I can claim “bardfinn” — and of course I’m bardfinn at twitter and google as well.

Looking forward to Tradewars!

This upgrade is a refreshing new feature to the site and a delight to experience.
Sometimes it seems like there is nothing new on the internet anymore, but not
today. Thanks!
