I’m not sure exactly how the Trades Descriptions Act is worded, but unless it explicitly defines what a pie legally is, then “This is a standard usage and has been for a very long time,” should be a sufficient defense.
It’s a tart. It’d have to have a sheet of pastry over the top to be a pie (a whole sheet. A lattice does not alter the tartness)
I did say it was a legally moot point … because the TDA does not define “pie” - it is not designed to define things, but to make clear that manufacturers and retailers must not misrepresent their wares.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure. I know many other countries have some… quite specific and detailed definitions of some food terms, so I wouldn’t have been surprised either way. The US also has those kinds of truth-in-advertising laws, we just don’t even pretend to try to enforce them.
