Yep. A lot of FLGSs weren’t very friendly to young women. One bad sign I learned to recognise was the presence of middle aged grognards playing Napoleonics or naval miniatures. Those places stunk, and not just from the B.O. of the regulars.
Like you say, a lot of those places I remember from the 80s and 90s are long gone. Newer game stores seem more welcoming.
Yeah, assholes trying to gatekeep geeky spaces is a larger issue than most people acknowledge. Even non-geeky spaces have this issue going by the rise of ladies only sports bars popping up lately.
Once again alienating a segment of the population who may possibly vote R but put political differences aside for the sake of the hobby. What I’m trying to say is there are people who think “yeah I’m Republican,” but never bring it up while gaming; and, now what, someone goes “hey did you hear what that weirdo Vance said about D&D? bad habit? can’t wait to vote that trash away.”
Also, most of the people who shrieked that D&D was “demonic” are so long dead now, i just can’t figure out who he’s trying to impress with this talk!
The friend who introduced me to D&D, and went on to become a serious Magic player, made this part of his online profile picture. Before she announced Walz as her VP.
Jack Burton : “Jack” what? I’m supposed to buy this shit? 2000 years, he can’t find one broad to fit the bill? Come on, Dave, you must be doing something seriously wrong!
