Yeah. Which is why these narratives about “establishment conservatives” joining the Trump administration and being the “adults in the room” were all bullshit at the start, too. That was said by many about Bill Barr, for example. The problem is, he was always an authoritarian toad, but was actually held in check by previous Republican administrations he worked under - and this wasn’t exactly hidden information. Who he was wasn’t a secret. It’s why none of those establishment conservative Trump appointees who made “principled stands” against Trump on some issue ended up talking about it publicly - ultimately they joined this White House because some terrible thing about Trump appealed to them. They were lacking decency and dignity to begin with, but previously held positions that granted them the illusion of it. Trump didn’t need to corrode them, he just lays bare ugly truths about people.
