Jeffrey Epstein is dead of hanging in Manhattan jail, authorities say they failed to prevent suicide

Reuters says jail policy requires two separate guards to check cells on his block every 30 minutes. Last night they didn’t do that.

Also, people on suicide watch are supposed to be checked up on every 15 minutes. It sounds like they aren’t sure if he was on suicide watch, I guess on account of how long it’s been since his last alleged suicide attempt.

“Found unconscious with marks on his neck” ?

He strangled himself, then hid the weapon while he was unconscious :+1:

Is it even possible to strangle yourself? I really don’t know. I’d think you’d pass out and start breathing again before you killed yourself. I suppose you could probably damage your own trachea real good if you were determined. But dang it does sound like some guard doing him in or turning a blind eye while someone else did.

I guess when he was put on suicide watch, that meant they would watch while he committed suicide?

I am not a believer in conspiracy theories but I wouldn’t be the slightest but surprised to find out this was arranged (or at best highly encouraged).

It’s a big, sprawling, and complicated felony case that spans many years and jurisdictions. The sixth Amendment is pretty vague in what constitutes a “speedy trial”.

You want a conspiracy theory? How about the theory that his death was faked with the help of his many powerful interested parties, and that he has been spirited away to a private island with a plastic surgeon at the ready*.

Autopsy by an independent examiner or it didn’t happen.

*I am not actually promoting this idea, but I’m certain it will show up very soon.

NBC says he was not on suicide watch. That’s the first place I found that would say either way. However, he was in a wing of the prison where they’re supposed to keep a pretty close eye on you. But I guess they take it easy on Friday nights?

@anon43737975 re: the June, 2020 trial date–believe it or not, the defense was saying they couldn’t possibly be ready for trial before Labor Day, 2020. I guess it’s not that hard to believe, since they bill by the hour. Imagine how crestfallen those clowns are this morning.

I think you may be grossly overestimating how much it would cost to bribe a guard to neglect their duty regarding the safety of prisoners.

You could probably convince them to walk away just by offering to pay for the coffee.

He was a high risk celebrity inmate that had previously tried to commit suicide (or was at least injured mysteriously on his neck) just a couple of weeks ago - and he wasn’t under constant surveillance? What the fuck is that?

“Jeffrey Epstein is a pimp for the rich and powerful” was a conspiracy theory until last month

With the Enron guy? They have an underground lair, in a volcano?

Just wondering, do they have CCTVs in prison cells or is that too panopticon?

  1. I am sure I am late to ask, “What did he know about Hillary Clinton?” Though for the first time in many uses of the meme, probably true.

  2. I say good riddance.

  3. It seems to me that if there are other participants to be prosecuted, I am not sure why Epstein needs to be alive to prosecute them. All of the witnesses and evidence that would have been used against Epstein, if there were other people present, they too should be prosecuted with that same evidence.

I guess it would have been sweet to have Epstein fingering past guests, “I saw so and so do such and such.” but there was no guarantee he would do that.

So now that the ball is rolling with the depositions and evidence gathering, we SHOULD expect a whole host of other perpetrators being charged - yes?

I agree, if it was a genuine suicide he probably did it because he saw no plausible way he’d ever get back to having a life worth living. In that he probably wasn’t wrong.

Yeah, not on suicide watch, not even receiving the level of supervision required for the entire cell block, on the night after these documents became public. Something funny is going on here, even if it’s just that Epstein bribed some guards to let him kill himself.

The same reason he probably thought he could still get away with it: it was his leverage. No point spilling until he had the cushiest possible plea deal.

I don’t doubt the danger to people like Epstein. And poor child rapists, either.

I do doubt that they are mainly disposed by violent, brutal career criminal due to some moral code in any meaningful way. It’s a cheap way to get some likes from the citizenry and other inmates.

Not these ones, I guess.

@Mister44 Probably some members of Epstein’s staff will be charged, but I doubt you’ll see Dershowitz or Prince Andrew dragged into court. I have a feeling that a lot of the evidence will be misplaced or destroyed, or prosecutors will say it wasn’t what they thought it was, etc. Things will be redacted or sealed, as with the previous investigations.

If nothing else he could have provided a heck of a lot of damning testimony. And a lot of dark secrets probably died with him.

Even if no one else went down, this suicide denied his victims the justice they deserve. Death is not justice—everyone dies eventually. He should have had to face his accusers in a court of law and live out the rest of his days with the consequences.

Sure Jeff - can do. But I’m going to need half up front for expenses.

Zoik! See you on that island when you get released.

At this point, if I hear the name Hillary Clinton before the 2020 election… She’s not running. She’s been so thoroughly investigated and nothing really damning has shown up. Is she a corrupt politician? Sure. Is she the orchestrator of the most corrupt political dynasty ever… yeah. No.

Please, I hope so. Let’s take down some bad guys and have them actually face consequences for their action.
