Prior to this context, I thought the gag was that young John, leaving his trial, exonerated, walked past the ghost of Clarence Darrow on the street, maybe?

Me too! These are my favorite recurring BB feature. They’re already infrequent enough, but months? Ack!

Thanks for pointing that out–I thought the same thing–Clarence Darrow at the time–makes sense now.
