I’m sure that when his subjects get home at night and realize what he was actually saying, they wish they had. Unfortunately, there is a clear cognitive delay working against them.

My Kiwi husband says that every time “leader of the free world” is mentioned in the news.
I explain to him it’s just something we Americans say to make us feel important.
Then I explain to him that yes, we Americans ARE that fragile and narcissistic.

Hey, now, that’s a broad brush! I’d say much of the BBS commentariat does not require this sort of national ego stroking (phrasing!?), and is quick to criticize the US’s many, many, MANY shortcomings and flaws.
