That is why I still have a few in my FB feed, and subject my self to talk radio if out doing errands. Gotta see what the goons are up to.
It’s an important point, though. The reason people like Peterson get so much traction is because other journalists, producers, etc who have only shallow knowledge of the fascist movement don’t know who he really is. He wears suits, speaks like an educated man, and is Just Asking Questions™ so he gets put on panels, interviewed on CNN, etc, etc. He has enough of a thin veneer of legitimacy that mainstream news producers don’t know they should be steering clear of him.
I transitioned late, at 43, when I realized it was start transition or end it due to the constant crushing dysphoria. HRT saved my life. If I am forced to detransition, I’m almost certain that it would kill me.
I’m happy for the first time since childhood, and even if it were a mental disorder (it’s definitely not), the only one it’s affecting is me. It’s my body, just let me live.
I hear and agree with everything you’re saying, but want to add that there’s one aspect you didn’t mention, and I think it ties into this discussion of ‘top surgery’ well:
When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, it is automatically assumed that she (on behalf of the man in her life?) will want reconstructive surgery to make herself look ‘normal’ again.
It is the one elective plastic surgery that insurance companies (in the States) automatically cover, because it is considered essential for a woman to look like a woman.
Meanwhile, it is harder to get reduction surgery unless there is a documented medical need (cancer, back pain, etc.), again because there is the assumption that a woman needs to look like what a man would want to see.
So someone with breasts choosing to have them surgically removed, and not for cancer or back pain, is outside the belief system of our culture. It’s the flip side of the same misogyny.
Right, but I feel with one difference: media folks know what he is, by and large. We tend to ignore statements like this not because we don’t see what he is, but because reporting it makes it too obvious to the reader what he is. Another way of putting it is we know Petersen isn’t really just an educated man Just Asking Questions, but we choose to pose him as this for reasons.
[ninja edit: fury]
You know, Petersen’s fanciest outfits are sometimes made fun of, but they obscure the fact that he looks like he’s cosplaying when he wears any adult clothes. One of the oddest things about him.
And aren’t familiar with racist crap like The Bell Curve when Peterson raises it as “free speech in academia”.
Yah, I agree with that for sure. That’s a much better way of putting it. Jon Stewart has ranted a lot about this sort of thing lately- journos knowingly choosing controversy and ratings over ethics and truth in who they give their platforms to.
These carefully crafted phrases are all over the religious right and the media falls for those to. Things like “School Choice” to destroy public schools and transfer federal funding to religious ones. Or “Teach the controversy” to get evolution removed from biology textbooks. If the people reporting on this stuff don’t know the whole back story of the movement, they take those PR statements in good faith and regurgitate them in the name of false balance. It’s maddening to see the media failing to be the Fourth Estate protecting democracy the way it is supposed to be. Nobody is critically examining these claims or challenging them in any way. CNN is just reading everyone’s press releases, it seems.
They keep asking him back and he keeps opening his mouth and showing us exactly who he is.
In our case, my wife wanted reconstruction for her self image. She felt that is she was left “flat and scarred” it would make her sad and angry. I didn’t care, she is beautiful with or without breasts. Her body, her call.
As it should be.
Health care for women is not for anyone else to dictate.
Who the fuck is Jordan Peterson?
Maybe they could each get a unique Alt-Right Asshole Number so we can tell them all apart
He’s a former professor and author popular in some circles, associated with the “Intellectual Dark Web” that serves as an ostensibly erudite face for the far right, and of concern as a gateway to such views.
Until this morning I was happy that:
- I’ve never heard this man speak (I am aware of his nonsense, just not delivered verbally)
- I’ve managed to not see a video about a cup and some girls.
- I’ve managed to not see a video about a tub and another girl.
After having listened to him a couple of times via links in this thread, only 2. & 3. remain. And I have some sort of weird (but not post-coital) regret that I may have chosen poorly… maybe those other two would have been less upsetting?
