Of course, even the smartest and most compassionate public policy won’t necessarily reach someone who’s convinced COVID-19 is a hoax, and smart public policy won’t be enacted by state or city leaders who believe the same.

And that is where it all falls apart, thanks to Trump and his toadies. I try to imagine what the public response to this pandemic would have been had not dear leader convinced them it wasn’t real. There would have always been some people who wouldn’t accept it, but not nearly the numbers that are preventing any kind of decent response to the situation.

It now occurs to me that Trump bragged about “beating” Covid-19 in much the same way that he once bragged about beating STDs on the Howard Stern show, as if recovering from a disease contracted through his own reckless behavior was a mark of honor.
