Kevin McCarthy ousted as House Speaker

And if they simply ignore their own House Republican Conference rule, who can hold them to account? Which (R) will be the first to stand up, object, and face the retribution?

That doesn’t sound like much of a guardrail

I really don’t think that’s going to happen this time. House Democrats seem more united right now than I can ever remember them being, and they’ve made it clear that this problem is one Republicans created all on their own, and it is up to them to fix it. If there are votes for a new Speaker next week, Democrats are going to all vote for Jeffries, just like they did back in January. That means 217 out of 221 Republicans will have to agree on a Speaker. I also don’t see 5 Republicans bailing and voting for Jeffries. That would be political suicide. It’s not going to happen.

With respect, that doesn’t answer the question. I know that he’s a shithead.

This would be the best option but they have 40-something days until the next potential government shutdown and the 15 votes that they needed for McCarthy don’t fill me with hope.

Yes, but they won’t do that, because the worse thing you can possible do if you’re a republican is align with the Democrats, because then you’ll get primaried by the MAGA crowd, even for people in moderate districts…

they don’t care. The MAGA folks want the government to not do anything.

:woman_shrugging:

And they need to be…

They do, and as bad as this chaos is for government, the unity of the Democratic Party right now gives me hope. They resisted the RFK, Jr. bullshit and attacks on Kamala Harris, both designed to sow doubt in the 2024 ticket, and they’ve resisted becoming co-dependent enablers of the House GOP’s nonsense. I think this unity will inspire unity in Democratic voters as well.

Indeed. It says “give us control back, and we’ll actually get shit done.” That message will hopefully get through, despite the bad faith efforts of the mainstream media trying to show how “both sides” are bad…

In the original Speaker fiasco, McCarthy originally lost to 14 MAGA nuts for a few rounds, an opponent list that grew to 19 and 20 after losing confidence until finally some of the first 14 “defected”. Starting with only 8 rebel Republicans, should present less of a challenge, especially after the spanking they’re getting from the other GOP in the press for triggering all of this and from their base on social media for losing a few of their own high profile gang members (including Bobert) on the ouster vote.

Like Beau of the Fifth Column, I find it funny that they kicked McCarthy out for working with Democrats by proposing an ouster that could never have happened without the help of the Democrats - who ousted McCarthy for repeatedly following the MAGA faction’s demands. The lunatics have far less power this time around than they did before. Of, course, it helps when we already know several of them are making predictions that prove they can’t count votes.

It’s not that they think someone better will be selected; it’s that they think whoever is elected in McCarthy’s stead won’t be effectively any worse than him.

Understood

David Duke without the baggage… Man, the second you say that you’re “like David Duke” - you got baggage. That’s the baggage. The fact you rub shoulders with the KKK.

ofc, not entirely sure whether Jim Jordan is a better pick. I’m not aware of any KKK ties but… he’s preeeeetty anti-democracy.

At this point it’s better to not rank them, because they’re all S-tier shitstains.

No, because he coddles pedophiles.

This isn’t a case of who is worse. This is a case of fascists being in power.

Good on the Democrats for not bailing out the GOP out of their own mess. A strategic decision that I was glad to see the entire Democratic minority in the House united in.

It makes every kind of sense including pragmatically. Wrongly but persistently, the GOP see Democrats’ willingness to compromise for the common good of the country as a weakness. The only way the GOP will deal fairly with Democrats is if Dems deal from a position of strength.

This is the Democrats teaching them the error of their ways. Democratic party support is not assured. If the GOP try to get leverage by threatening to burn the House down, the Democrats will just move over to their half and let the GOP burn themselves.

Had McCarthy dealt more reasonably with the Democrats, they would have had a reason to keep him. He would never have had to cut that embarrassing deal where Gaetz could fire him in the first place. And thus McCarthy could still be Speaker.

In the parlance of our times, McCarthy played himself.

Make him Speaker and he’ll never shut up.
