Kevin McCarthy ousted as House Speaker

AIUI California has an “everybody in the pool” primary system now, so the usual crazy-base phenomena don’t necessarily apply anymore

When the Proud Boys show up to demonstrate (and try to provoke a fight) in Los Angeles, they regularly come in from Bakersfield. That’s how right-wing McCarthy’s district is. Like all Republicans these days, he has to pander to fascists to some degree even if they aren’t his main focus.

Also, go to “State of Jefferson” country in NoCal and you’d be hard-pressed to distinguish it from Arkansas. And Orange County is full of Reaganites and Xtianists (and surf Nazis in Newport Beach).

Surfers may have a laid-back, zen-like reputation in a lot of popular media but unfortunately violent, xenophobic surfer groups have been a part of California surfing subculture since at least the 1960’s. Within the surfing community this is often described as “aggressive localism.”

The most aggressive of these groups are sometimes called surf nazis, and some of them have definitely earned that title. From Wikipedia:

(Obviously the rule of goats applies to anyone who would willingly accept that label.)

Not that any of this has much to do with Kevin McCarthy, I guess, as there are probably few surf gangs in his district.

Fox reporter shows Kevin McCarthy how he could lose House Speaker to a Democrat

Some of the worst of the violent punks in SoCal came out of the skate and surf scenes, weirdly enough…
