Guy’s a depraved killer.
But/and when I saw the GOP courting him — this kid — I started to find his story really tragic.
Like here was this guy with this “middle school, but with a gun” mentality — and here were a bunch of politicians making sure he stayed in that mentality for the rest of his life.

I didn’t ignore it. I just think it’s really tragic even when the depraved killer gets a redemption arc, because his victims still have had their own stories stolen from them.

And isn’t that what we actually should be focusing on? I mean, it’s not like Rittenhouse had some tragic end after being tricked into his actions. It’s true he was certainly taken in by the far right’s ideology, but he also materially benefited from it, and wasn’t just some 12 year old dupe. He was 17 when he shot Huber and Rosenbaum, and is now an adult, so more than old enough to make his own choices, and not be excused for his actions by adults using him.

There’s no tragedy here for this murderous turd, not in the dramatic sense. The right-wing politicians and pundits who promote stochastic terrorism are not all-powerful gods or inescapable institutions, they’re lazy opportunists. The central figure in the story entered into his actions with plenty of agency and experienced no real downfall as a result of what he did.
