City leaders are now considering drastic measures to address the crisis, including borrowing money to settle judgments and settlements, and implementing hiring freezes.
Anything but re-considering the supposed effectiveness of qualified immunity, kow-towing to police unions, and “warrior training”.
I want professional liability insurance to be mandatory for every cop. It would take some of the burden of police misconduct off taxpayers and be a handy way of weeding out the most problematic offenders. Can’t be on the force if you’re uninsurable!
What about fixing the police force, so taxpayers don’t have to foot the bill when they brutalize citizens?
that costs money
This is the birthplace of S.W.A.T., the foundation of American police militarization. You reap what you sow.
Chicago paid out $841,000,000 is police settlements between 2019 and 2023. One officer alone was responsible for 1.5 million of that. How he stayed on the force after the first one is a mystery to me.
Maybe the city will shift the burden of accountability (and accounting) to the union and officers and end qualified immunity.
Go after the cops and the superiors that enable their behavior instead of dipping into taxpayer money. At the end of the day they aren’t the ones paying so there’s not much to worry about, and if they get fired they can just go to another station and get hired there.
