Did Eco base that on a piece that Benjamin wrote? The idea that fascism hasn’t a coherent ideology but rather an aesthetic seems really close to something at the back of my mind. I’ve read the NYRB article it was published in English in and I don’t even recall footnotes.
that does explain qanon folks waiting for a jfk ( any jfk ) to show up in dallas and save the world. doesn’t really matter who the messiah is, so long as you gather together and chant angrily about it in the proper way.
All signs are that the conservatives on the Supreme Court are going to throw out NY’s gun restrictions. The only real question is just how expansive this ruling will be, and whether any meaningful gun regulation will still be allowed to remain anywhere in this country. I’m not counting on it. Pretty soon they’re likely to overturn the 1934 National Firearms Act so that everyone will be able to buy unregistered machine guns and hand grenades.
Texas has shown the way.
If SCOTUS guts the possibility of reasonable gun legislation, then states should enact a spate of unreasonable requirements around gun ownership, and then encourage the public to enforce those requirements with lawsuits against anyone they suspect is out of compliance. You want to own guns? No problem. Have as many as you want. But expect to spend a lot of your time in court proving you’ve dotted every “i” and crossed every “t”. Make sure you’re up to date on your property and excise taxes, both of which will have jumped 5000% this year, also that you spend 15 hours a week reading to the kids at the local kindergarten. Don’t forget to pay a firearms whisperer to come in twice a month and make sure your little male enhancement talismans feel secure and loved in the angora gun-cozies you crocheted for them. And you should probably be a lot nicer to your neighbor - maybe mow his lawn or wash his windows, lest he feel compelled to sue you for a possible breach of the firearms code.
Stupid? Yes. But so is gun ownership. Unconstitutional? Nope. Your right to own a gun isn’t infringed, it’s just fucking expensive. Choices, man. Life’s full of ‘em.
Which is why gun rights advocates have joined in opposition to the Texas abortion law.
How on Earth did we get here? The absurd rendered mundane.
unfortunately, that still suits conservatives just fine. law and consequence becomes a matter of who can afford the best lawyer - even more so than it is today
there’s no good solution for when the court starts making up things ( see also: unrestricted campaign finance )
the guy who Trump once praised at length for striking down the Affordable Care Act and who overturned protections for trans patients in health care settings—ruled that for-profit businesses do not have to abide by LGBTQ+ discrimination claims if it clashes with their religious beliefs, as reported by the Dallas Morning News . This ruling is in opposition to a ruling from the Supreme Court that protected people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
i mean what’s next? “honor killing” is okay so long as your religion says so?
the whole point of a secular government is to have one set of rules that apply to all citizens equally, and to not discriminate ( pick and choose ) based on religion
religious freedom is not the freedom to choose what laws apply on a person by person basis
That story is so confusing. “I’m going to prove how bad this pizza is by ordering more than one per day.”
It’s like the opposite of a hunger strike.
Well. Not all religions obviously. Just some.
I mean it’s RIGHT THERE in the first amendment!!! No infringing, gubmint!!! /s
The notion that corporations can have “religious beliefs” is one of the stupidest, most dangerous, and most unabashedly disgusting things this country has ever conceived of (not the most, because hoo buddy is there some heady competition for that top spot, but it’s definitely up there).
We’re putting the Gilded Age to shame.
I mean it does sort of make sense, but i’m trying to find a excuse to justify eating cheese cake everyday to fight the alt-right
Now you’re wondering, why is this posted in the GOP ASSHATS thread? Well…
The man told the employee he was with Tyndall Air Force Base and was told to cut wires due to a power issue, saying he was tasked because he lived nearby and was with the Navy. The man then ran away, last seen heading toward Front Beach Road.
“This person knew what he was doing and knew how to disable and make it very difficult to repair the satellite dishes,” said Ulysses Carlini, WJHG-TV’s General Manager. “This is not just a random act of vandalism. The individual was methodical in disabling and strategically cutting cable that linked all of our satellite dishes to our facility.”
The WJHG employee said the man he saw was dressed in a dark jacket and camouflage pants. Bay County Sheriff’s deputies responded Sunday night but did not find anyone matching the description.
I have a very strong felling we are going to be hearing about him in this thread again in the future. Also, the station’s owners Gray Television have fired folks for not getting the covid vaccine too.
Whenever someone talks about American business as being socialist, or even Marxist(!), they’re channeling the John Birch Society, of which Charles Koch’s daddy was a founding member.
