Not entirely sure where to put this but itโs hilarious.
Texas is being sued over border shit. Operation lone star is gov Abbottโs political ploy to arrest ppl crossing the border on criminal trespass charges so they can be detained (in terrible conditions) and prosecuted by local district attorneys. Lawsuit alleges this is unconstitutional because it infringes on federal responsibilities/supremacy clause.
This is the good part: the suit was brought in one of the most liberal counties in Texas and, as result, the state will be represented by the local DA. the DAโs office has stated they agree the border initiative is unconstitutional
โProsecution for criminal trespass as part of Operation Lone Star violates the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution and represents an impermissible attempt to intrude on federal immigration policy,โ Garzaโs response said.
The guy suing has some smart lawyers
While I continue to support these bills, I will not support separate actions that worsen the underlying disease of division infecting our country,โ Sinema said.
She later added: โWe must address the disease itself, the disease of division, to protect our democracy, and it cannot be achieved by one party alone. It cannot be achieved solely by the federal government. The response requires something greater and, yes, more difficult than what the Senate is discussing today.โ
[snip]
Delivering the speech wearing purple, a symbol of Washington bipartisanship, Sinema said she wished there had been โa more serious effort on the part of Democratic Party leaders to sit down with the other party and genuinely discuss how to reforge common groundโ on voting rights issues. But she also said Republicans โhave a duty to meet their shared responsibility to protect access to voting and the integrity of our electoral process.โ
โEliminating the 60-vote threshold on a party line with the thinnest of possible majorities to pass these bills that I support will not guarantee that we prevent demagogues from winning office. Indeed, some who undermine the principles of democracy have already been elected,โ she said. โRather, eliminating the 60-vote threshold will simply guarantee that we lose a critical tool that we need to safeguard our democracy from threats in the years to come.โ
Omfg.
How?! They tried! Again and again
There wonโt be a democracy in the years to come unless we safe guard voting rights now
Eta: my outrage is directed at sinema, not @Faffenreffer
And she did so much to lead that effort. But alas, she was just a powerless US Senator - that both sides were trying their best to join them. Zero leverage.
You did nothing. You know that the Republicans werenโt going to change their ongoing efforts to undermine democracy.
And you did nothing. Youโre more guilty than even they are.
In what fucking world is she living in? The Democrats have been bending over fucking backwards to accomodate teh increasingly radicalized GOP since the 1990s!!! Is she HIGH? They refuse to compromise on literally ANYTHINGโฆ JFC!!!
Iโm beginning to agree with that more and more. Anyone who still thinks that both sides are the problem here are living in a fucking dream world.
Appeasement is always the answer with these guys, isnโt it? Might do BETTER if they learned a little history, or hell, if they learned ANY-FUCKING-THING
Why should they botherโฆ all they care about is lining their pockets at our expense. They seem really deft at that. Itโs that, and the arrogance that because they are around โit canโt happen hereโฆโ The fuck it canโtโฆ
They say, as it is is actually happening around them.
Itโs one part believing in American exceptionalism, one part wanting to think โonly they can fix itโ, and one part ignorance of how a country goes authoritarian in the first place.
The US approach to tyranny is like a house with fifty locks on the door in case a murderer tries to get in, but then itโs just left open to the angry guy with an AR-15 because he seems like good people.
Well, he was white, soโฆ /s
i mean, that is what she wants. her call to bipartisanship is just double speak for: i donโt like the goals of the democrats ( and, or her financial backers donโt )
โEliminating the 60-vote threshold on a party line with the thinnest of possible majoritiesโฆโ
the democrats have a thin majority of seats, but represent tens of millions of more people. add in the the 2/3 filibuster rule โ which is not remotely part of the constitution โ and the senate is a completely undemocratic institution.
while bidenโs recent speech was decent โ he should have been up there explaining how rigged the system is, and been advocating for removing the filibuster entirely as well as getting dc and pr statehood.
At 50-50, the Senate Democrats represent 42 million more people than Republicans. Quick napkin math for filibuster sets the difference for 60-40 at a minimum of a whopping 54 million people more than the opposition. Thatโs just taking the smallest population Republicans crossing the aisle. If we go by the ten most moderate Republicans, itโs 70 million more.
Well that was fast!
This is excellent news because it opens the door to more challenges. The ACLU and Rio Grande legal aid represent a lot of the ppl detained and Iโm sure they are paying attention.
This is what we have to look forward to for every election going forward.
