Joe’s gotta go. The GQP blocked an investigation into a nearly-successful, violent attempt to actually destroy our government and he’s concerned about restoring the original filibuster hypothetically “destroying our government?”

Yeah, agreed. The argument that if you force him out, West Virginia will replace him with a Republican is bankrupt. With Manchin in office playing Peter Powerbroker, the Democrats might as well not have the majority at all. Joe needs to get on board or GTFO.

unless i’m misreading your comment, you seem more positive the west virginians will replace manchin with a democrat than i am. for all his flaws, manchin is better than baucus, pryor, or lieberman from the old obama days. and manchin for sure beats having “majority leader macconnell”. we wouldn’t have any part of biden’s agenda with that.

Agreed, but now that they’ used up all their reconciliation options, nothing else will get through the Senate until Manchin changes his tune. Or Biden finds a work-around to open that gap wider.

You misread me. WV will almost certainly put a republican in his place, or return Manchin to the senate as a republican should the democrats convince him to defect. By “bankrupt” I meant that IMO it’s a hollow threat, since McConnell’s still controlling the agenda from his perch in the wilderness. The democrats are out of options. As @DukeTrout points out, reconciliation can only do so much. They’ve gone as far as they can and there’s important work left to do, so what now? Get on board or GTFO.

This is the part that tortures me. From that side, There is no moral compass. There are no core values. There is only “us against them.” I don’t see any way to have coherent conversations or “build bridges” in this hellscape.
I do appreciate the people who are trying, but we need to keep this insane cognitive dissonance in mind during any and all negotiations.
