I only read the original book, and have never watched the series because it’s not any kind of ‘entertainment’ to me… but I’m guessing that there’s a distinctly noticeable lack of diversity and melanin amongst all the slaves handmaids and “wives” in the show, for the exact same reason?

My understanding is that there are more PoC in the series than in the book, because in the book the One Drop rule was applied to have them all designated “Children of Ham”, and they were among the first to be “resettled in the Colonies”. And they were never heard from again.
Atwood didn’t put anything into her book that hadn’t already happened somewhere.

I have gay friends who either have already moved out of Texas or are in the process of doing so.
I am not hopeful about which way the political winds are blowing here.
The massive influx of Freedom-Lovin’ Left-Hatin’ Trump voters (from California primarily but not exclusively) over the past decade has really moved the what-is-achievable political needle way way waaaaaaaaay to the right of center.
You can usually spot them in the wild by their love of performative cruelty, American flags flying on flag poles on their property (sheesh what other country has people who fly their national flag in their yards?), and warning coloration (threatening t-shirts, caps, bumperstickers, and of course the punisher or three percenter decals on their oversized, shiny, gas-hog cars and trucks).
I really wish I were kidding about all of this, but where I live, this is exactly what I have in my field notes. They are all around me until I get into the Austin urban core.

They exist in other places. It’s usually protective coloration to warn everyone else away.
In Australia, there’s also the Eureka flag when you’re not a unionist (and too often also if you are), and in England there’s the flag of St George.
