I know a lot of people complain that the judiciary is βundemocraticβ but this is the kind of person you often end up with when judges are elected instead of going through a formal screening, nomination and appointment process by people who actually have some kind of background in law.
Isnβt it crazy that we have better guidelines re: diversity, removing bias, and confirming qualifications in this country when it comes to gaining a seat in a symphony orchestra than a seat in the judicial system?
Instead of judicial confirmation hearings, we could have a moot court. Instead of performances behind screens, the nominees would submit anonymous written opinions. The nominee with the most well reasoned opinion gets the job.
Completely upends the Ginsberg rule, but at this point, who cares?
Unfortunately, as long as local police departments keep shielding and protecting them, they will feel emboldened. Santa Monica (and other parts of CA) may be blue, but their cops are the same old right-wing assholes.
Now if it were a BLM or womanβs abortion rights protestβweβd see them dressed up in riot gear.
