That was mirrored in his role as Alan Brady in The Dick Van Dyke Show. For a long-time, the cameras never showed his face.

In the original pilot for The Dick van Dyke Show, there was a completely different cast and Reiner was the lead. (Obviously, the pilot had a different name.) The pilot failed and the cast was changed.
