DO WANT
(yes it’s a bloody complete thought!)
Shh, don’t tell @robertmckenna
Consistently great across all Star Wars films.
In an effort to be positive I will mention that I am fond of Johnny Williams’s soundtrack to the Long Goodbye (I don’t think it’s on streaming) and I have a soft spot for the great Lalo Schoffein’s disco cover of Jaws on Black Widow.
Seriously, you can’t not like the Long Goodbye. Him and Johnny Mercer I think. Jazz ballad, torch, mariachi. Fantastic. The man has chops.
Just wish he didn’t like Mahler!
I mean I know what they’re getting at but still, that’s too facile.
Autocorrect. I can spell Lalo’s name!
Nino Rota:
Michel LeGrand:
…and so many more: “Hold my beer.”
I am curious as to what composers might be considered as “the greatest” and what metrics are used to determine that. Is it output? Box office? etc. If looking internationally there’s bound to be hugely influential composers Americans aren’t familiar with.
TIL: Mission Impossible theme! Played with Piazzola! Recorded with Johnny Hodges! Argentinean Jewish, probably knew some Yiddish tango as well! Wow thank you both so much, I had never heard of him.
Arrangement by Oliver Nelson.
It’s funny because I kind of always knew Schifrin: Mission Impossible, Bullit etc. but I only heard Piazzola first from the New York Kip Hanrahan albums and Kronos quartet (and neither at the time they were released either), though of course you recognise that Grace Jones did Libertango so you always knew him too!
He’s (Schifrin) also handy if you want to show 5/4 time to people.
