Let's Talk to Trump Supporters

I saw an immediate narrative being pushed right after the election that the Bernie situation wasn’t a contributing factor in Hillary’s plight.

I feel like it was a major contributing factor.[quote=“ChickieD, post:82, topic:94345”]

You hit the nail on the head. From now on we shall refer to it as the FKB memeplex. Or at least, I will.

The fuckabout memeplex, as in “Who gives a fuckabout us?” “Who fucksabout whilst the people sleep?”

Yeah, Imma keep this one.

You are admittedly advocating manipulation over discourse.

Are not those some fairly shaky foundations upon which to build future dialogue, or is it to be manipulation all the way?

The more I think about our conversation, the more angry I get.

At the point of the election we had a choice between two options:

  1. A capable, respected politician with experience in foreign policy and domestic policy who had her fair share of scandals like most people at her level, and

  2. Donald Trump - a con man whose idea of foreign policy is “build a big wall” and whose business experience was basically being a giant bully.

And what my friend says is, I’d rather give America the giant middle finger than elect a woman.

A lot of women keep on saying they’d vote for the “right woman,” but I never hear someone say that they’d vote for the “right man.” Donald Trump clearly was not the right man and yet, given the choices, she chose him.

I get that they were both flawed, but rather than choose someone who could keep us safe and moving forward, who clearly loves to be a public servant, my friend chose a man who is incapable of putting the needs of the country ahead of his own interests.

This is war. The Republicans are perilously close to being able to pass Constitutional amendments. If that happens, you can say goodbye to women’s rights, LGBT rights, drinkable water, and freedom of religion forever. This is literally a question of preserving our society and our planet from collapse.

Taking the high road may net you a moral victory, but it won’t save you from someone who literally thinks that we need to use nuclear weapons on Syria so Jesus can come back.

Maybe the disaster of a Trump administration and some competent leadership of the Democrats (leading to a motivated voting base) might help in the mid-terms and take some of those states back, get rid of the Republican governors of blue states etc.

The GOP are 5 states away right now. Which are the best states to turn back? Win those in 2018.

No I get it. WAR! Annihilation. etc.

I got this today via a misaddressed email. I responded, but before I share how, I’d like to see how others in this thread think we should respond to something like this when “engaging” Trump supporters;

I used to think I was just a regular guy, but . . .I was born white, which now, whether I like it or not, makes me a racist.

I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today’s standards, makes me a fascist.

I am heterosexual, which according to gay folks, now makes me a homophobic.

I am non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class and an ally of big business.

I am a Christian, which now labels me as an infidel.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment, which now makes me a member of the vast gun lobby.

I am older than 70, which makes me a useless old man.

I think and I reason, I therefore I doubt much that the main stream media tells me, which must make
me a reactionary.

I am proud of my heritage and our inclusive American culture, which makes me a xenophobe.

I value my safety and that of my family and I appreciate the police and the legal system, which makes me a right-wing extremist.

I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to each individual’s merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist.

I believe in the defense and protection of the homeland for and by all citizens, which now makes me a militant.

Recently, a sick old woman has called me and my friends a “basket of deplorables”.

Please help me come to terms with the new me . . . because I’m just not sure who I am anymore!

I would like
to thank all my friends for sticking with me through these abrupt, new found changes in my life and my thinking!

I just can’t imagine or understand what’s happened to me so quickly!

Funny . . .
it’s all just taken place over the last 7 or 8 years!

As if all this crap wasn’t enough to deal with, I’m now afraid to go into either restroom!

In God We Trust.

Does your friend ever ask you if you’ve seen some new advert on TV? I’m not trying to be cute or impertinent, or whatever ‘cute’ is supposed to have meant in the 1950’s, but I’ve met a bunch of people, who seemed to me to be really susceptible to propaganda and, I know it just sounds stupid, adverts. Like for banks and gum or whatever.

It boggled my mind so fucking much that this sentence would not be accurate without the swearing. But these people exist, and they are not necessarily unintelligent or gullible people. I just wonder if your friend had ever shown, like, a glimmer of suggestibility or… I’m not quite sure. I sort of imagine all of your friends being quite self aware and I would have thought that inured one to propaganda.

The FKB woo is strong.

We could buy them some pearls to clutch?

How about awarding them a medal in the Persecution Olympics?

Like, you could argue this point by point, but this is just Gish-Gallop-Glurge and I don’t think they’d be open to it.

Is it really pearl clutching though? What’s the one where you’re blown down by a falling handkerchief but in a kind of Old British Gentry kind of way?

I would start with

I am older than 70, which makes me a useless old man.

and decide that it wasn’t worth discussing any of the others.

It seems less like ‘any man will do but it has to be the RIGHT woman’ and more 'she is wrong, anyone but her. Literally. Anyone.

Plus Hillary used the party or the party on its own kept throwing roadblocks in front of sanders and throwing doors wide for her. There is a certain bitterness there, at least there is for me.

I mean, voting in Trump might actually replace “cutting off your nose to spite your face” for the spot idiomatically representing that archetypal sentiment.

Sooooo…

What I’m saying is that’s real fucking bitter.

Again. I voted giant meteor.

You know I think this kinda works.

The next time you see someone hurting themselves out of spite, try describing it as “Oh, she’s just voting Trump in.” and see if it catches on.
