I’ll never forget seeing him at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, opening for The Smiths. Just him and his guitar. We had front row seats. Still to this day the greatest concert I’ve ever been to.

My memory of first hearing the song “New England” was the curiosity to my young ears that he was playing a folk song alone on electric guitar, and it wasn’t a gimmick, it was honest and real.

In a related story, my wife has had to listen to a bad Billy Bragg impression for 38 years. (It largely consists of me shouting “Shir-LeeEY” in a bad cockney accent).
