The official name is the Metropolitan Police Service.

The challenge might be to find any police force culture that isn’t pervaded by racism, homophobia, and misogyny.

So we can be fairly confident that the Human Exploitation and Organized Crime Command remains capable of providing human exploitation and organized crime?

Oh no! Not the Met! Oh wait the Met who’s so infamously racist that the Not the Nine O’Clock News took them on in a sketch in 1980. The SPG mentioned in the sketch.

Has the London Metropolitan Police Service been informed that the USA is not a good role model?

Changing it won’t be easy. The examples of how criminal cops even “other” their colleagues makes it clear. Folks like this infest organizations at every level, to ensure a consequence-free environment for themselves, and a toxic one for everybody else. Replacing gangs in the barrel while reassuring recruits that any bad apples will be fired and prosecuted would be a start.

Amazing that they could publish this. It would never be allowed in the US, although any police force in the country would qualify for having this report written about it.

Police violence is very much written about, in depth and in detail in the US… Just because you don’t see it on more mainstream outlets (or you only do occassionally) doesn’t mean that there aren’t people studying and reporting on this issue.

This report was commissioned by the Met itself, though.

The FBI does keep track of such things - if problematically…

This whole idea that “it can’t be reported” at all is ludicrous, though. Yes, shit’s bad on this front no doubt, but the facts of police violence is widely studied and reported, and yes, law enforcement agencies do some of that reporting.

Would the NYPD commission an independent report into institutional racism, sexism and homophobia inside the NYPD?

Yeah… they do actually investigate themselves…

Much like this, it’s not because they want to, but because they are often forced to do so. I’m guessing that the Met was also forced to do so.

But my larger point is that yes, this stuff can and is reported on in the US. It’s just flat out false that it does not happen or that it’s “banned”. People assuming that the corporate media is the beginning and end of investigations isn’t’ particularly helpful in understanding the landscape on issues like this. Most internal investigations into institutions like the NYPD are not going to come from within, but will be forced from without.

And the existence of the met report does not necessarily mean any meaningful change will happen. This is far more often prompted from without an organization than from within.

See the Macpherson Report published 24 years ago, the first to describe institutional racism in the Met.

It turns out women are as good or better than men in a lot of traditionally male occupations. Who woulda thunk it?
