Love the new minimalist design!

I also try and let others (including the vendor) know that their product is unappetizing and they will likely receive less business as a result.

Same thing happened that time I was given Salted Caramel Lint.

… about their attitude toward their readers. I thought you capable of logical deduction 101.

You seem to overinterpret my (and others) posts and read things I didn’t write. If you think calling someone condescending as an insult you probably need a bit more Life 101 experience.

Who made you forum police and BB white knight btw? OP asked for opinions and I gave him mine.

That doesn’t make sense. Perhaps at one point it might have, but BB isn’t something fun done where they only want other “cool kids” to frequent. It’s a mainstream site which gets revenue from the number of people who visit it. People get paid from this site. I heard Falcor has a customized “Back to the Future” prop replica Delorian from the mad cash he makes. Maggie’s baby needs a new pair of shoes.

Anyway - the point is, this is a money making enterprise, and creating something that drives people away, thus reducing the amount of money it brings in, makes no sense.

Then again, maybe the new layout is just what a group of Masocists were looking for and the site traffic will actually grow.

Of course there will be another design. There’s always another design.

I don’t care about a rollback, but the new design definitely leaves me feeling open to future changes!

As for Beschizza’s tone, meh… that’s his tone. This is a self-promotion platform in some sense isn’t it? I mean that’s what writing for a blog is, right?

If, as the somewhat paranoid here seem to suggest, the change was specifically made knowing somehow that people like myself would have troubles with it so that we’d leave, what a stupid and bizarre way of going about that! There’s nothing particularly cool or uncool about the new layout. And how would they know who would stay or leave?

If the mods or the site owners wanted me, specifically, gone they have MUCH better ways of seeing to that (though in my case just telling me they don’t want me reading their site would be enough to send me packing). Somehow I don’t think that the new design was done with such a deliberate nefarious strategy. It probably was done to get more content in one place, allow better viewing of adds, etc.

Would be interesting if the size of the post increased relative to how many people were viewing it though (that’s not the case, but for some reason I think it would be interesting to look at).

Same person who made you the most valuable critic they ever had, of course.

See, you’re making suggestions, not returning percieved insults (while seeking restitution for the same), and seem to know that we’re guests and readers, and that so long as we’re adding, we’re adding.

I also like all your suggestions in this thread. Bigger something for well read stories is a neat concept.

I’m sure you love it when people tell you what your goals are.

Oh the irony …

Oh? You have an alternative theory? I guess all these ads on BB are window dressing.

My browser comes without curtains, you should check it out.

I’m a bad example, because there has never been a BB redesign that I haven’t taken an immediate dislike to. Also, I never look at the front page since the BBS was introduced, but this one seems very unpopular.

From the glances I’ve taken at it I’d say that more prominence to the blog posts over the features and a bit more text would solve most issues. If they want to go more featurey and less bloggy I’d question why all of the new features seem to be TV reviews - surely not why anyone visits this site? Also, I asked before and nobody bit, but why did Jamie leave BB if this was the direction they wanted to take the site?

Yeah - but my point is if they weren’t interested in making money, they wouldn’t have ads. Including those from American Apparel, which don’t seem to completely jive with some of the values of some BBer’s.

You expect them to change.

I do not expect you to change.

No irony. Please stop now thanks.

Yes, that you do not love it when people assume and tell you what your goals are.

You are defining things ‘for the sake of argument’ that are not yours to know. I was trying to point out that it is highly pretentious, and fallacious, if your inference was that you know better what the goal is. Lots of news outlets do not exist in order to make maximum cash. I have no psychic powers, so I cannot grant you that point of your argument, and I have tried to say so. Maybe this attempt was clearer.

Just my opinion man.

I don’t see this going anywhere. Have a good day.

Don’t get your hopes high for a rollback.

Nope, didn’t say that. Reading comprehension 101.

As others have said, even after a week, I don’t like the new design. At the very least the size should be swapped between features and rolling stories.

Bug Report: As a result, I am now using the http://boingboing.net/page1 link, as suggested by Mark. However, when you finish reading that first page of entries, the “Read Older Entries” link 404s because it takes you to:
http://boingboing.net/page1/page/2
and not
http://boingboing.net/page/2

Totally makes sense… I always forget that little guy is down there. In truth, I am somewhat entertained by the butthurt.

Why would you ever assume that?

Am done with Boingboing I think.

With the new design my eyes dart left and right, not knowing where to look or what to latch on. Am attracted by the larger posts to the right, before realizing that those are not the latest. The newer posts are to the left …? Right?
So awful. So awful that it boggles the mind. For people who describe themselves as being on top of the latest and bestestest trends, you sure showed the world here.

Boingboing’s still the 1st or second thing I visit in the morning, but it’s muscle reflex at this point, as I now get annoyed when I reach the page and after a very quick glance move on.
And for the first time this morning I thought of removing Boinboing from my favorite links altogether, to never return.

I think I will. Did it before with other sites. And there’s not much here that I don’t find elsewhere anyway.

I know that people say the new homepage is chronological, but I cannot easily pick out the new posts, posts are missing that are in the other view, some older posts are appearing before some newer ones.

Maybe the new site is just making me crazy, but after struggling and struggling to use it I’m one of the many resorting to /page/1

Funny thing is I have nothing against the design style, I read a lot of blogs with similar styles, there is something specific to this implementation that I can’t quite put my finger on that has me turned upside down. I think it is that there are different post types that fill in at different rates in different areas and posts can be tagged to jump order, whatever it is I find it unusable and I am a web developer by trade, very few sites stymie me.

(as a fellow web developer, I appreciate the amount of work poured into the new design, i normally wouldn’t chime in about it unless i really really really had an issue, which alas is the case. i want to like it, i really do.)
