He probably meant to use use the Trump flag with the gold-tassel fringe on the borders. Rookie mistake using a normal one. Only a gold-tassel fringe Trump flag has the ability, somehow, to neutralize the government’s weather controlling machines. Just like that, knocks it out in a minute.

All sarcasm aside, and actually thinking it through for a moment – this is basically an ancient rite to appease the storm gods. A sacred object is placed in the path of destruction. My god is stronger than the storm god, and he will protect me.
It’s the modern equivalent of throwing a sacrificial offering into a fire, or building a makeshift altar during a disaster.

Your explanation sadly sounds intensely plausible to me. Why is this doofus planting a flag AT a hurricane? Because he believes liberals are controlling it and he’s showing his defiance to this non-existent cabal of leftist supervillains. People genuinely believe this weather control bullshit, enough to risk their lives to essentially give the middle finger to someone who doesn’t exist.
