I was using Reddit and Paypal about an hour ago, so it seems to be resolved.

Uh, didn’t someone predict this just last month?

The Atlantic posted a good article about today’s attack as well.

Thanks for that reminder. I recall that BB article.

Nah, that’s just representative of what Level 3’s network status always looks like.

(Worst fsckin’ transit provider on the planet, but everybody uses them because cheeeeeep!)

Why aren’t more DNS servers configured to cache the addresses of popular destinations in case an authoritative server isn’t reachable? If I understand this correctly, what got DDOSed was the authoritatives hosted by Dyn, not whatever DNS your machine is querying.

That was painful to watch.

I’ll pretty much always upvote or like or whatever when I see this clip posted anywhere. It’s just so good. The zenith/nadir of hacking representations.

No one is safe on the internet, really, for this technology that has taken over our lives is more like the Wild West than it is civilized urban existence. If you wanted to be afraid, then be more afraid. Hackers probs gots yer genital pics. Good one.

I’m at work. Our credit card charge/verification machine is throwing up errors (connect and TCP) and generally running s-l-o-w-l-y. I have no idea if it’s related to the DOS attacks or not.

Maybe not. After finding out our time-clock program wouldn’t run because we were offline, somehow our router just happened to get power-cycled. The router came back up and the time-clock program ran and I am taking my meal break.

One interesting thing is that Dyn just posted an article on their blog yesterday:
Recent IoT-based Attacks: What Is the Impact On Managed DNS Operators? which states “As an Authoritative DNS provider, the data we have from an attack often isn’t directly actionable” and “We need to act soon, as exploiting the growing number of insecure devices has already proved an effective method of disruption.”

Would be reasonable to suspect that it is exactly that scenario happening - botnets formed from over 150,000 cameras, refrigerators, routers, etc. have been setting new records in the last couple of months.

You do realize that this critical infrastructure is completely insecure, right?

^^

It seems to be …

Next, friend?

Do you know what I think?

I think we should nuke the current internet infrastructure and rebuild it, with humanity in mind…

P.S. It would eliminate the “cyberthreat” in one fell swoop. It would enable real collaboration, real sharing, real progress…what are you afraid of? Change? Change is constant. Check yer maths. We must change. Let’s change for the better, shall we?
