Marjorie Taylor Greene now owes $48,000 for not wearing a mask, and the fines keep rolling in

Fines have been issued to members of Congress since the War of 1812.

I’m sure Tucson isn’t alone with unpaid bills. I do hope the aggrieved municipalities have enough moxie to say “no permits until the check for your last visit and escrow check for your upcoming visit clear”.

The constitution, maybe?

“The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”

While that clause apparently isn’t a blanket exemption from arrest, it does seem like it might prevent congress from stopping her on her way to the chamber. Dunno.

Why? The republicans wouldn’t hesitate to, regardless of precedent, if they felt it was politically expedient.

This is part of why the Dems suck ass. They talk a big game, but most of the country hates MTG. They’re not representing the will of the people by letting her stay.

Of course. Campaign funds are functionally no different from personal funds.

That’s how trump never goes to jail when he personally enriches himself with campaign funds.

No Personal Use of Campaign Funds or Resources, and the Related Verification Requirement

House Rules. The key provision of the House rules barring use of campaign funds for personal purposes is House Rule XXIII, clause 6(b) which provides that a Member may not convert campaign funds to personal use in excess of an amount representing reimbursement for legitimate and verifiable campaign expenditures. [Emphasis added.]

Quite likely to attract the attention of the Ethics committee, but ethics, schmethics.

What are they going to do? Tell her off? Write a letter? Say she’s very naughty?

So send someone to break her kneecaps if she doesn’t pay up right now. I guaran-fucking-tee that none of us would get away with ignoring a $50 parking ticket, let alone $48,000 of any kind of fine. Why do they even bother if it won’t ever be enforced?

Now now, let’s not be too hasty about this… /s

Converting campaign funds to personal funds is certainly pretty common, but doing it without getting caught might well require more cleverness than she has shown any evidence of.

Yeah, like Kyrsten Sinema doing campaign fundraising in Europe, even though foreigners can’t donate to senate campaigns. (Ex pats, can, but the flying to Europe on the campaign funding dime is seems rather gratuitous.)

Is she grifting off of the Bannon-adjacent contingent? At this point we need a score card or diagram to keep up with the grift.

Following the example of her orange leader, she will never pay what she owes and any attempt at collection will be proof to the Q-nuts that she is being persecuted.

Watch her make a spectacle by paying it all in loose change.
