This is incredibly well put. An obsession with individual self defence is libertarian cowboy fantasy propaganda.

What we need to say is that everyone has a right to be safe in society and focus on building a society where that is true. The alternative is to start handing out bigger and bigger guns until everyone is a murderer. That’s not safety, that’s insanity.

Healthy well functioning institutions are what make people safe, not guns.

That is why, if you cared to read the thread, many other people had already said them. The “one line” we reacted to is also the only thing you actually brought into the discussion.

That’s right, I was "yes, and"ing the conversation. The one part I added at the end was still on topic because MTG (and others) are demonize trans activists and memes calling for their defense. That is what she is referring to when she says “incitement of politically motivated violence”. Which is bullshit.

I go on tangents with my brain all of the time - it’s how it has always worked, but that doesn’t mean other people aren’t creating off ramps as well. As I said, I chose words carefully to try to stay on track.

I didn’t say it wasn’t on topic, I said it was garbage. Guns have not been our friends in this. And it’s insulting to pretend that’s not what you meant by self-defense. Like what, you spend a decade going on about them and how great they are and how much you know about them, and then this week you mention you can help teach trans people about “self-defense” and we’re all supposed to think “hmm, but maybe he means Jiu Jitsu”?

David Berkowitz is a real person who murdered Donna Lauria, Christine Freund, Virginia Voskerichian, Valentina Suriani, Alexander Esau, and Stacy Moskowitz

It’s not entirely clear whether in the screenplay the phrase “Mister 44” means Berkowitz himself, or his murder weapon, but either way it’s the name of a person or thing that killed a bunch of innocent people in the real world
