Matt Gaetz outsmarted when he tried to push Chinese propaganda during a congressional hearing

Only one the ones that end in ‘Y.’

And he nodded his head at the end of that exchange.

To be fair, some of the generals aren’t that sharp:

I doubt the answer could be meaningful. There were a bunch of Nazi paramilitaries before Russia invaded, and those individuals probably haven’t become any more moderate or moved away from armed violence over the last year. Whether or not the current org chart conceals that, it won’t alter the reality.

IMO the way to counter this as a pro-Russia talking point is to refuse to deny or minimize it. Some of America’s support for Ukraine will directly support nazi killers, and the US doesn’t have the power to prevent that. If you emphasize how this is a grim, serious conversation, you don’t have to explain why it has no place for infantile choads like Gaetz.

The issue with Russia and India is that even today, the Indian Air Force primarily flies MiGs. So they kind of have to stay on good terms with each other because of this business arangement.

I satisfied my curiosity and went beyond the headline. I don’t know the context of the discussion, what point they wanted to prove or disprove in the argument overall. But the Atlantic Council that TFA cites, their research, programs, Board of Directors do not immediately strike me as Chinese propaganda:

Driven by our mission of “shaping the global future together,” the Atlantic Council is a nonpartisan organization that galvanizes US leadership and engagement in the world, in partnership with allies and partners, to shape solutions to global challenges.

I hate to break it to you but “generic Nordic warrior stuff” is “Euro nationalist and white supremacist stuff”.

I’m sorry, but are we talking about the same “TFA”?
The one that this comment section refers to?

Because the Atlantic Council isn’t mentioned in it at all.

What is mentioned is the Global Times:

So looking at the Greene and Gaetz stories today I have come to the conclusion that even though both Congress persons have staff that try to vet their comments before they embarrass themselves they both ignore their advice like Donald Trump used to do with his staff.

At one point:

  • TFA said:
o the Global Times produced an investigative report that talked about
+ The Atlantic Council’s digital forensics research lab found the Azov Battalion was receiving assistance [from the US, presumably -ed] as far back as 2018.

That’s a lot of hearsay to unpack.

An incomplete outline:

  • Can the Global Times story be fact-checked?
  • If true:
o Is the assistance direct or incidental as part of general assistance?
o Is the level of aid traceable to Azov significant compared to the bigger issues in play, or is this cherry-picking?
    o etc.

And most importantly: if we’re not hearing this from any other source, should we bother? Personally, I wouldn’t spend a lot of effort chasing down an uncorroborated story in the Global Times. I’d say the story is more interesting as a gauge of what story the CCP is sticking with, rather than as a fact-finding article.

Not so much outsmarted as self owned.

Although casualties and replacements may have diluted them over time.

I just can’t get excited about the Azov Battalion. I mean, yeah, all nazis are pieces of shit. But when your country is under siege by a foreign invader and the local nazis wanna take up arms in defense, are you gonna tell 'em NO?

Regardless, the whole “dEnAZiFIcaTion” thing is just one of a dozen bullshit justifications Putin has given for this invasion before pivoting to the next one. And then, on cue, the GOP gloms onto each bullshit justification in turn and abandons them just as quickly.

For those who think the existence of the Azov Battalion is sufficient justification to invade a sovereign nation: there are more nazis in literally ANY town in Arkansas than there are in the entire country of Ukraine. I guess Putin should invade Arkansas next… cuz, like, DeNAzIFICatIOn or something.

“Hurrbadurr, I’d like to enter into the CONGRESSIONAL FUCKING RECORD some Chinese propaganda rag because I find it politically expedient.” - Matt Gaetz, R-idiot, paraphrased

Yep. I found an awesome business in the Seattle area that was into one of my hobbies. I talked with the owner for a couple hours. It’s very “Nordic warrior themed.” He also had about a dozen posters/pictures prominently displayed that were Pride and/or BLM themed. He said that not only does it reflect his values, it sends an immediate message that White supremacists who might be attracted to his business should fuck off.

It’s also a good gauge of Matt Gaetz’s reading material.
