Meet the people who insist the Earth is flat

Yeah, that’s precisely what it was. It’s called blowing off steam. There’s no way in hell I would ever be okay with actual poll tests. Good God, what happened to a sense of humor?

My dog thinks his reflection in the mirror is another dog. If my dog could speak, he would probably be a Flat Earther. I would also find him intolerable.

Would I earn >100% if I say that I’ve never listened to Alex Jones?

Such anger.

I like it.

No, oops indeed, t = v / a.

Right answer.

Nice try.

Anyway, are the flat-brained scientists and aficionados aware that the variation of gravity with height can be measured, and that is consistent with a round Earth, and not with an accelerated flat Earth?

Nope.

the equation v = at only holds at non-relativistic speeds, where v is a tiny fraction of c. As v approaches c, mass increases, so momentum can keep going up but the velocity doesn’t: velocity approaches but never reaches c. The true relationship, accounting for relativity, is not v = at but the hyperbolic tangent function v = c·tanh(at/c).

If you accelerate at 9.8 m/s2 for 1 day, both equations give you a speed of 0.0028 c.

After 30 days at 1 g acceleration, the non-relativistic equation overestimates your speed as 0.0847 c. It’s really only 0.0846 c.

After 6 months, the non-relativistic predicts 0.514 c, but it’s really only 0.475 c.

The non-relativistic equation predicts that you’ll hit light speed after 354 days. In fact, you’re only travelling at 0.762 c.

After 2 years of 1 g acceleration, speed is 0.968 c. After 3 years, 0.996. After 4 years, 0.9995 c. You’ll never get to light speed, no matter how fast or for how long you accelerate.

But we’d know if that were happening, because the H-emission spectrum from every star in the sky would be blue shifted to double its frequency. Aaaaaaand it’s not. So.

30 percent of them smoked, eh? That’s not schizophrenic self-medication, no, not at all.

True. Another interesting question is what are we accelerating against. Perhaps the stars are also accelerating at the same rate! :exploding_head:

Anyway, height dependence of gravity.

HOLY CRAP!!! Nothing is real except the cats!!!

I knew it! That little shit in my house has been holding out on me! (I mean, the whole knowing the real secrets of the universe thing. Maybe the next time he wants some catnip we’ll have to do some wheeling and dealing.

"… I pointed out to them that I knew full well that the so-called ‘windows’ of the space station in fact were extremely high resolution screens showing a CGI image on loop. I then demanded to get outside of the space station to investigate this for myself, but they got all weird and started blabbering on about me needing ‘training’ in order to be allowed to do a space walk… "

Some people are now so fed up with being told facts, that they dont want to agree with or simply dont understand, that they are prepared to deny the very pillars of science itself. As surely the Heliocentric model is the first one we learn at school and comes along with a history of deniers. These people are somewhat like the Amish in choosing to live in a bubble of nativity for their own mental health. Ignorance is bliss and the flat earthers are drawing a line where they will not cross and that starts with the most basic of all scientific discoveries. Unlike the Amish I doubt it will prove to be healthy in the long run.
I blame Fox news and break down of journalism into all facts being open to opinion and the stronger the opinion the more outrageous it becomes the more power it accumulates.

Thanks. I was calculating the time it would take to travel 1 lightsecond. My HS physics teacher must be rolling in his grave right now… And since he’s a physics teacher, he probably won’t stop rolling unless acted upon by an outside force.

Well, here’s an interesting Flat Earther who builds rockets based on formulas not science:

“I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust,” he added. “But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”

Steam. How the fuck does that work?

Not very well, and they are really bad at moderation and games having their reviews manipulated, both positively and negatively.

The LH2/LOX rocket engine does generate a lot of steam…

That’s really interesting. What other effects would we observe as we drew ever closer to c?

To be pedantic, what you’re calling the “real” speed is the speed as observed in the launch-pad’s frame of reference. In the rocket’s frame of reference, it does take a year to get to lightspeed, and past it. Back in the launcher’s frame, it takes an infinite amount of time to get to that speed. Both measured speeds have a claim to being the “real” speed. Welcome to relativity!

Meanwhile, most folk are going to regard 99% lightspeed as close enough for most purposes.

I imagine that they would counter with something like the idea that the stars are just lights on a dome which accelerates with us so there would be no shift in the spectra. (They always find some way to wiggle out of rationality.)
