Minneapolis ablaze after prosecutor suggests no crime was committed by cops who killed George Floyd

“One bad apple spoils the whole barrel” apparently doesn’t mean what people think it means. It doesn’t mean “oh its just one bad apple, leave it”, it means “holy fuck, get it out of there before it destroys everything!” If people really believed it was just a few bad apples (according to the original meaning of the phrase) they would drum all brutal cops out of the force, assuming they hadn’t already been weeded out during training. Instead of closing ranks around them, the other cops would shun and repudiate them.

If your moral code is based on aphorisms that nobody understands anymore, you’re going to have a fucked up moral code.

Back in the Old West, “Judge” meant a fat guy. Okay, so Judge Roy Bean, The Law West Of The Pecos, faced a case of a white cowboy shooting a vaquero. He poured a round of drinks (his saloon was his courtroom) and retired to his back office to study his few fat law books. He emerged with a verdict: “Boys, I don’t see no law against killing Mexicans. Case dismissed.” And he poured another round.

The US has long effectively lacked laws against assaulting and killing non-WASPs. No, their lives do not matter. They are the owned, protesting against their owners. Rotsa ruck. :face_with_head_bandage:

Yes, cops are quite different than teachers.

Indeed. One group is an underpaid and underappreciated contingent of highly trained and well-educated people working to make a difference in the world in the face of massive institutional oversight and pressure, expected to take whatever abuse is hurled their way without fighting back or even raising their voices while heaped with ever-increasing amounts of responsibility.

The other group is cops.

Agreed. I would never compare the two. It is a bit pointless.

We should compare the two, though, because they both have enormous civic responsibility to our society. Yet of the two, teachers are the only ones anyone ever tries to hold to account for their mistakes. A teacher can receive disciplinary action for doing pretty much anything worse than raising their voice at a student, but a cop can escalate a situation up to and including inappropriate use of lethal force and the best you get from the police department and the prosecutor is “they made a whoopsie-doodle, a little fucky-wucky, everyone makes mistakes, nothing to see here”.

Capitalism’s guard labour always gets a pass from conservatives. It’s such a strong impulse that, despite their contention that labour unions are the enemy of the “free” market, Republicans and Libertarians “somehow” allow for one big exception: the LEO unions they slather with kisses and sweetheart deals and military surplus.

You do see some small-l libertarians making a stand against police unions, but they’re the exceptions and are driven less by a thirst for social justice than a desire to be seen as cool rebels who just want to drive fast and do drugs without being hassled by The Man.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/george-floyd-family-release-results-autopsy-70994420

The family’s autopsy differs from the official autopsy as described in a criminal complaint against the officer. That autopsy included the effects of being restrained, along with underlying health issues and potential intoxicants in Floyd’s system, but also said it found nothing “to support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.” The family’s autopsy found no evidence of heart disease and concluded he had been healthy.

Independent autopsy confirms what we already knew.

ETA: sorry for the dupe @Grey_Devil I misread your link as the family was asking for an independent autopsy. I will leave this since it links to a different source.

No worries, the more sources the better. Hoping BB will post something about the autopsy but whenever i submit something it seems to get glossed over ]:

Did those idiots think their BS “preliminary autopsy” was going to have any good outcome? I can’t even begin to imagine how that conversation went where they decided to release that not asphixia crap.

Note: Blank for the number because however many I guess is probably too low a number. :disappointed:

Between QI and the insainly sweet deals the damn police unions get out of city hall boot lickers it is impossible to convict or even fire even horrible cops. In Miami and many other jurisdictions a cop that has been accused of a crime is required by union contract to be shown every single piece of evidence and testimony against them before they have to be interviewed or answer a single question.
