Mississippi Republican calls to "succeed" from the union after Biden victory

I think Rush Limbaugh actually tried that, no?

Indeed, and the GOP and GOP collaborators would still be operating within the US on behalf of their true allegiance to that fascist rogue state.

Harry Turtledove explored some of the problems secession would create and exacerbate in his Southern Victory timeline, but even that didn’t IMO capture how self-destructive it would be if it happened in the 21st century.

Here’s Alabama’s map:

Mobile is no “liberal” haven.

I’m not sure if you’re replying to my remark on Mobile. I was refering to economic drivers, in this case the port of Mobile. I wasn’t talking about politics at that the time, but possibilities for a shift away from oligarchic resource-extraction.

The port of Mobile has been part of the reason Mercedes, Hyundai, and similar manufacturing facilities have opened in Alabama. In time, this might lead to changes in people’s attitudes. Granted, given the destruction of the unions, the overall increase in distance between the richest (which is why I keep saying oligarchs) and the work class, the chance of real change in people’s economic circumstances is fairly slim.

FWIW, I wouldn’t classify anywhere in Alabama as a “liberal haven.” It’s a place best seen in the rearview mirror.

Don’t forget Huntsville. Rocket scientists.

In my mental shorthand, I had lumped Huntsville in with the port of Mobile, because of the Tenn-Tom waterway. But looking it up now, I realize that the Tenn-Tom opened way too late for that. The rockets actually went all the way up the Tennessee to the Ohio then down the Mississippi to NOLA. I must have known that at some point, since I was such a space nerd as a kid.

I suppose then, that they built rockets at Huntsville for the same reason they made uranium at Oak Ridge, lots of convenient hydro in the ass-end of nowhere, far from looky-peepers.

I would not want to fight with Mississippians on their home turf.
