Myspace lost all the music its users uploaded between 2003 and 2015

Good though. Maybe #deletefacebook might get some traction after all?

But then, if even the president of the US doesn’t care what he tweeted some time ago…

Which prompts the question if HR departments still looking at social media presence.

Got that to. Never had content there. Google forced me to have G+. Now they want me to save my content. How nice of them to bother me with nonexistent content!

I tend to not worry about the technology as much these days. I did for a while.

Now I figure that many copies on many systems is adequate protection. I also prefer live, online storage to offline storage like tape or CD/DVD-R.

That’s mostly because offline storage doesn’t exactly encourage checking of the media - it’s a hassle.

One of my personal projects at the moment is a fast hash/checksum checker. Something a little like AIDE/Tripwire, but for paths. With multiple hashes per file (the whole file, just head and tail, a random location). The idea is that I can run it every now and again to add in new files and do a comparison with old files, and spot any bitrot.

I’m well aware that btrfs/ZFS can spot bitrot too. I’ve not tried ZFS, but had some poor experiences with btrfs, and would therefore appreciate having my own tool for the purpose. When I’ve written that, my backup strategy will be pretty much complete…
